Includes mostly Rotch's notes, 1879-1884, from various classes and laboratories taken as an undergraduate at M.I.T. and from Harvard graduate courses in natural history, 1884; as well as seven volumes of research notebooks, 1877-1885, recording information about trains and train trips. Also professional correspondence, 1895-1912, with colleagues, European and American book dealers, and organizations, such as the Carnegie Foundation. Some of the correspondence, with related reports and notes, is about the Atlantic expedition. Other material includes manuscripts and notes about ballooning and Benjamin Franklin; manuscripts of lectures on ballooning and of the book, Conquest of the Air (1909); and notes, 1898-1900, on sunspot observations and kites.

Correspondence, writings, records of astronomical expeditions, diaries, notebooks and scrapbooks of David Peck Todd, astronomer and teacher at Amherst College from 1881 to 1917. Between 1882 and 1914 Todd conducted nine expeditions to various parts of the world to study solar eclipses. The notes, photographs, drawings and memorabilia of these expeditions make up a significant portion of the papers. He was also a fertile inventor, and plans and drawings for many devices, some related to solving technical problems encountered on his expeditions are included in the papers. As an early enthusiast of aviation, he made a balloon ascent in 1910 and advocated aerial photography for recording eclipses. In Amherst he raised funds to build a new observatory in 1905 and records of this project and of his teaching career at Amherst are very well documented. His writings include three textbooks on astronomy and a wide range of scientific and popular articles, copies of which are in the papers. His wife, Mabel Loomis Toddd, who was the first to transcribe and publish Emily Dickinson's poems, was an active social force in Amherst and their family correspondence offers a vivid picture of the life of the town as well as a remarkably frank picture of their personal relationship. She also lectured extensively, basing her talks on observations made during the eclipse expeditions. Her letters to her husband during her lecture tours provide an insight both into her character and into female social life of the period. The 368 letters that she wrote between 1878 and 1922 are in themselves a significant section of the papers. Todd's correspondents include astronomers and scientists from all over the world as well as public figures in the United States. In 1922 he was declared incompetent and spent his remaining years in institutions.

Chiefly records of two directors of Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory: A. Lawrence Rotch and Charles F. Brooks. Rotch's records contain incoming letters from scientists at other observatories, such as Kew in England, Mt. Kosciusko in Australia, and the Institute of Meteorology in Nanking, China. Subjects relate to kite meteorology, cloud measurement, balloons (including ascents from Berlin, 1891 and Strassburg, 1901) and balloon construction, observations of auroral bands, etc., as well as events, such as exhibitions of scientific instruments and meteorological congresses. Notable correspondents include Octave Chanute and W. H. Dines. Also photographs, reprints, and documents concerning the Dines pressure tube anemometer. A considerable number of photographs, ca.1890s-1900s, show activities and staff at the Blue Hill Observatory and include interior and exterior views of the station and of instruments such as electrometers. Other photos from this period are of foreign weather observatories and equipment; the first balloon ascent in the U.S. (1904); cloud formations and phenomena such as lightning; and general views taken from kites. Additional Rotch records include typescripts of his writings on the use of kites for weather observations; notes on the International Congress of Hydrology and Climatology (1889) and on balloon ascents in Paris that year; letters and other papers about the New England Meteorological Society and its 1889 exhibit. Records of Brooks include some correspondence, ca.1930-ca.1940, mostly pertaining to radiosonde; manuscripts of writings; and news releases. Other reference materials in the collection are a large number of reprints of scientific articles, many by Harvard faculty; Blue Hill publications and reports; weather charts and graphs; equipment catalogues from Zeiss, Husun, Wild, and other companies; and books. Topics covered in these sources include kites and aeronautics, atmosphere, wind, temperature, eclipses and aurora borealis, radiant energy, thunder, storms, magnetism, and climate. There is also an automatic aerial camera (a special order by Rotch from a French firm in 1899) which is housed in the Historical Scientific Instruments Collection as well.
