Bontempelli, Massimo, 1878-1960. Bontempelli papers, 1865-1991.
Title:
Bontempelli papers, 1865-1991.
The collection extensively documents, through correspondence and photographs, Bontempelli's most important personal experiences after 1920, including his love affair with the French painter Mariette Lydis and his relationship with the writer Paola Masino. The writers and editors with whom he was associated after 1920 are also represented in the correspondence series, including G.A. Borgese, Jovine Livio Stanis, Emilio Cecchi, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Elio Vittorini, Ada Negri, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Ugo Ojetti, Anna Maria Ortese, and Alberto and Arnoldo Mondadori. There is a small amount of correspondence with Pirandello (8 letters) from before 1920 and a number of photographs of him from the thirties and forties. Substantial amounts of correspondence with Nino Frank and Malaparte concern the founding and editing of '900. There are handwritten or corrected typewritten drafts of Bontempelli's mature novels, including Il figlio di due madri and Vita e morte di Adria e dei suoi figli; selections from four short story collections; all plays except Guardia alla luna; many of the essays or lectures eventually published in collections, including those on novecentismo; translations; and numerous musical scores. A number of Bontempelli's stories, plays and reviews are featured in the collection's serials, while clippings include copies of his regular column for Tempo, coverage of his Senate election and nullification, reviews of his work, and accounts of his travels.

Title:
Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc. records 1899-2003 1945-1989
The publishing company Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc. was founded in 1945 as Farrar, Straus & Company by John Farrar and Roger W. Straus, Jr. After numerous changes in management and corresponding changes in name, the company became known as Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc. (FSG) in 1964 when Robert Giroux became editor-in-chief. The company firmly established itself as a quality publisher in the 1960s and 1970s. FSG remained staunchly independent of conglomerate publishing for many years. Even after selling controlling interest to the German publisher Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck in 1994, FSG maintained much of the freedom of an independent publishing house.

Title:
Joseph Bornstein Collection 1917-1952
Joseph Bornstein was one of the most accomplished journalists of Weimar Germany. His criticismof the political and social conditions in Germany in general, and of the practices of German justices in particular, made him a strong opponent ofthe right wing and populist parties long before the Nazis took power in Germany in 1933. Immediately after takeover, Joseph Bornstein left Germanyand settled in France where he worked for various German exile newspapers. After the war broke out, he left France and managed to emigrate to theUnited States where he worked for the Office of War Information. After the Second World War he became a literary agent and writer of non-fictionbooks. The material in the Joseph Bornstein collection contains material from the post-war period of his life until his death in 1952. It consistsof manuscripts, research notes, and professional and personal correspondence. An important part of this collection is material related to JosephRoth that contains some of his notes, his poems, and correspondence with some of his friends and publishing houses.
