Title: Chicago and Pacific Railroad collection. 1871-1946.

Most of the material in this collection is taken from the personal files of George S. Bowen, Vice-President of the Chicago and Pacific Railroad Company. The Chicago and Pacific had the option of constructing a railroad from Chicago west to Savanna, Illinois on the Mississippi River. Unfortunately, the railroad's management did not forsee the financial panic of 1873 and the effect it would have on the railroad. The majority of the material in the collection is from the years 1874-1876 and concerns the efforts of the company to raise money. The Panic of 1873 frightened many investors, and management was unable to raise sufficient capital. The railroad officers borrowed heavily and became so deeply indebted that the company went into receivership in 1876.
