Meeting minutes, financial records, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, photographs, reports, contracts, leases, correspondence, certificates, guest books, calendars and other papers from the Chicago Women's Club. The collection contains minutes from club meetings, membership and financial records, scrapbooks pertaining to the club's activities such as public education, women's participation in the World's Columbian Exposition, the judicial system and the founding of juvenile courts, penal institutions, World War I relief, African American art exhibitions, and other social concerns. Addition (2000.0021) is primarily minutes from various committee meetings of the Chicago Woman's Club between 1892 and 1998. Boxes 58-59 relate to the philanthropic pursuits of the CWC, including the Brayton-Young memorial fund, the Infant Welfare League, the Chicago Woman's Cottage (later known as the Park Ridge School for Girls), and the Cancer Research Institute at the University of Chicago. A full listing of all the organizations assisted financially by the CWC up to 1931 can be found in Box 60, Folder 3. Box 59 also includes building construction contracts and a building lease (blueprints filed separately in oversize folder). Box 60 contains various correspondence, financial information, and newsclippings, as well as some congratulatory certificates given to the CWC for its 100th anniversary. Boxes 61 through 66 contain scrapbooks, guest books, and calendars. The Navy Club guest book is signed by officers at a Naval event sponsored by the CWC in 1917. The memory book in Box 66 chiefly contains correspondence relating to philanthropy in the Chicago area, as well as major CWC events from 1929 to 1933.

Dummer, Ethel Sturges, 1866-1954. Papers, 1766-1962 (inclusive).

Correspondence, speeches, photos, reports, minutes, and articles document Dummer's efforts on behalf of juvenile delinquents, prostitutes, and illegitimate children, as well as her interest in progressive education and Chicago public schools and her work with leaders of the mental hygiene movement. Included is correspondence with her daughter, Ethel Mintzer, director of the Francis W. Parker School in San Diego, and such sociologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and educators as Jane Addams, Havelock Ellis, Sigmund Freud, Jessie Hodder, Karen Horney, Julia Lathrop, Norman Thomas, Miriam Van Waters, and others. Fisher's papers include her correspondence with her husband and others, a note from Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, records of the LWV of Winnetka, IL, and poetry. Collection also includes 18th and 19th century letters and documents of the Sturges and Dummer families.

Newsclipping scrapbooks of Lucy Louisa Coues Flower (Mrs. James Monroe Flower), Chicago social welfare leader, and of her brother Elliott Coues, an ornithologist. The collection also includes materials by and about her father Samuel Elliott Coues, a merchant and reformer; her brother Samuel Franklin Coues, a surgeon; her son Elliott Flower, a journalist and dramatist; and her daughter Harriet Dean Flower Smith Farwell. Topics include Mrs. Flower's teaching in Madison (Wis.).; child welfare and political activities, service on the Chicago Board of Education and the Chicago Woman's Club; the Chicago high school named in her honor, her election in 1894 as a trustee of the University of Illinois (the first woman elected to a state office in Illinois), the Illinois Training School for Nurses; her brother's letters from China in 1860; and various scientific interests of Elliott Coues.

Correspondence, minutes, monographs, reports, recommendations, handbills, newsclippings, notes, poems, and other papers of Madeline Wallin Sikes, a Chicago teacher and clubwoman and wife of George Cushing Sikes. Includes correspondence with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred M. Wallin, and materials on her many social service activities in women's organizations and Chicago political activities, notably the League of Cook County Women's Clubs, the National Consumer's League, the Chicago Child Saving League, the League of Women Voters, the Woman's Club of Austin, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the Association of Collegiate Alumnae, the Chicago Woman's Club, and the Mothers' Congress of Illinois. The papers contain a significant amount of material on her work with educational legislation, child labor legislation, and protective labor legislation for women. Collection also includes sundry items relating to Sikes' and her husband George Cushing Sikes' work with Jane Addams and Hull-House, letters and other items of George Cushing Sikes from the Chicago Record, plus a few papers of their daughter Eleanor Sikes Peters. George Sikes's letter of July 24, 1894, concerns George M. Pullman and the Pullman strike and mentions Jane Addams; his Feb. 29, 1896, letter deals with Miss Addams' efforts to have him run for alderman against John Powers.
