Warren Upham, secretary (1895-1932) of the Minnesota Historical Society, was born in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1850. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1871, and until 1895 he was engaged in civil engineering projects, railroad surveys, and United States geological surveys in New Hampshire. He married Addie Minerva Bixby in 1885.

The letters and diaries of Willoughby Babcock (1832-1864), a lawyer of Owego, N.Y., include more than 200 letters written to his wife while he served in the Civil War. Babcock II, as Selections from the Letters and Diaries of Brevet-Brigadier General Willoughby Babcock of the Seventy-Fifth New York Volunteers (Albany, N.Y., 1922).
