This series contains the Du Pont Company's correspondence with suppliers, attorneys, customers, labor agents, and sales agents. The files document the importation of saltpeter and nitrate for the manufacture of black powder, the selling of gun powder to the government and blasting powder to coal mine operators and railroad contractors. The process by which Irish workers were recruited with the assistance of Philadelphia agents is described. There is also some correspondence with competing powder manufacturers and makers of powder machinery. Letters describe the organization and operation of the Gunpowder Trade Association between 1872 and 1901.

Title: Records of absorbed companies, 1756-1937 (bulk 1875-1915).

This series contains the administrative and financial records of the explosives and chemical companies absorbed by Du Pont in the years after 1902, many of them former competitors. Included are records from the American Forcite Powder Company, Anthracite Powder Company, Arlington Company, Atlantic Giant Powder Company, Hercules Powder Company, Eastern Dynamite Company, Grasselli Chemical Company, Roessler & Hasslacher Chemical Co., Repauno Chemical Co., Hazard Powder Company, Laflin & Rand Powder Company, Oriental Powder Company, Phoenix Powder Manufacturing Company and many others. In all, the records of 243 companies are represented. Typically, these collections include stockholder and director minutes, financial records (ledgers, journals, and cashbooks), and stock transfer books. Occasionally, there are property records, sales records, patent files, and production records. For the most part, these records span the period 1880-1902, but some date from the immediate post bellum period and others are from as late as 1937.

Title: Papers, 1822-1899.

Henry du Pont's correspondence dates from his days as a student at Mt. Airy and at West Point. Although there is a very small amount of information on the evolution of the Du Pont Company after the Civil War, the collection is more focused on local business, farming and politics, and on du Pont's militia career and the defense of Delaware during the Civil War.

Minutes of general meetings, advisory committees, and board of trade (1872-1903) describe the Gunpowder Trade Association's policies and procedures. These governing bodies usually included representatives from E. I. du Pont de Nemours, Hazard Powder Company, Laflin & Rand, Oriental Powder Mills, Austin Powder Company, American Powder Company, and Miami Powder Company. According to the records as of 1872, these firms controlled more than 72% of the powder market.

The Longwood Manuscripts comprise the manuscript collections of P.S. du Pont. They formed the core collection of the Longwood Library, established as an independent research library in the year of his death. In 1961 the Longwood Library merged with the Hagley Musuem, and the collection became known as The Longwood Manuscripts.

Title: Records, 1800-1905.

The nineteenth century records of the Du Pont Company are remarkably complete. They document the founding of the Company in Paris in 180l, its evolution into an American partnership during the early decades of the century, and its first incorporation in 1899. The records document the financial and business negotiations which led up to the founding of the company, the selection of a site for operations, the erection of mills, the intallation of machinery, methods of manufacture, production, and marketing. The records also describe the importation of saltpeter from India and sodium nitrate from Chile and shows how these raw materials were used in the production of black powder. Correspondence with Philadelphia labor agents show that Du Pont was heavily dependent on Irish labor. The collection contains a good deal of information about the Irish workers and describes the paternalistic relationship that evolved between the Du Pont family and the company's labor force.
