Several different hands. One, p. 92-209, very similar to hand in V.a.96, leaves 1-84. Authors include Donne, Ben Jonson, Strode, and Thomas Randolph. Poems include Basse's epitaph on Shakespeare (p. 189); Herrick's King Oberon his cloathing, (p. 184); and Cowley's prologue and epilogue to The guardian acted before Prince Charles at Cambridge, 1641, (Wing C6673), (p. 212). On p. 216 is Mr. Denham's "Cooper's Hill", edited by B.O. Hehir in Expans'd hieroglyphicks.

Poems on a number of subjects, entered in several hands. The heavily-represented poets are William Strode (23 pieces), Richard Corbet (7), and John Donne (6). Also present is a version of William Basse's "Epitaph on Shakespeare." Most of the later poems are written by Royalists attacking the Parliamentary party. The volume consists of 70 leaves, one leaf between 35 and 36 lacking; the first part from the beginning to leaf 59 with the exception of two poems is in one hand and was written about 1638; the second is in a later hand, about 1645, with one poem at the end added by a third person.

Part I: chiefly poems arranged as a commonplace book with headings: Epitaphs Laudatory, Epitaphs Merry & Satirical, Love Sonnets, Panegyrics, Satires, Serious Poems (last one labeled but not used); probably by a student at Oxford. Includes poems by Donne, Raleigh, Corbet, Strode, St. Clive, Henry Wotton, an epitaph on Shakespeare by Basse (leaf 3v) and Shakespeare's epitaphs on Sir Thomas and Sir Edward Standly (leaf 8). (In same had as copy in Portland MS see William Shakespeare A textual companion, 457.) Part II: Exercise book of declamations, epistles and verse in English and Latin, many by Thomas Smith and a few by John Smith, ca. 1659-1661.

The poems are by or attributed to H.B., William Basse - Upon Poet Shakespeare (Part II, leaf 8), William Browne, Thomas Carew, Richard Corbet, John Donne, John Earle, Owen Feltham, J.M., Ben Jonson, Henry King, George Morley, E.R., William Strode and others. Also cookery and medicinal recipes in other hands. The name Tyrrell is penciled on leaf 2v of Part I. De Ricci notes that the volume is believed to be partly in the handwriting of James Tyrrell. Part I: ink recipe (leaf 2v), poems (leaves 3-54r), receipts (leaves 54r-117); Part II: verse (leaves 1-20), receipts (leaves 21-54).

Partially autograph manuscript. Contents include Clio, Nine eclogues in honour of Nine Virtues, dedicated to Richard, Viscount Wenman, of Thame Park, Oxfordshire, "as it was in his dayes intended" (and thought to be in Basse's hand). Also, Urania, the woman in the moone, dedicated to Wenman's daughter, Lady Penelope Dynham (which supersedes an earlier dedication to Henry, Prince of Wales), and The metamorphosis of the wallnut-tree of Borestall, in an epilogue and 3 cantos, betweene Jasper & Jefferye, both written in a copperplate hand.
