The portion of the Emmet Collection housed in the Manuscripts and Archives Division consists of approximately 10,800 historical manuscripts relating chiefly to the period prior to, during, and following the American Revolution. The collection contains letters and documents by the signers of the Declaration of Independence as well as nearly every prominent historical figure of the period.

Samuel Vernon on the shipping of indigo, cotton and other goods, the sale of a ship, King of Spain's uninvolvement in the Peace (at Aix la Chapelle), "... as the French merchant (ships) will pass unmolested and the French settlements in the West Indies have no further occasion of the English Flaggs [sic] of truce for supply ... French Privateers to take Spanish commissions ...", Goddard's building of a ship (July 18, 1748); Thomas Delaval on the Vernon Co. ship sailing to the coast of Africa then to South Carolina to load rice (May 11, 1756); Richard Parrish on increased demand for coffee due to unusual trade in Europe, effect of price on demand for tobacco and change of trade route from Ostend to Hamburg from India (October 4, 1796).

Printed letter addressed to Sam[ue]l and Will[ia]m Vernon, Newport, [R.I.], announcing partnership between merchants Henry Crouch of South Carolina and John Gray, formerly of New England. John Gray announces his plans to establish a commission house in Charleston, S.C., and soliciting their patronage, "If you are concerned in the West-India Trade, the difference of the Carolina and our Market, may be an inducement to you to order your Vessels there from the Islands."

Obadiah Brown I (1712-1762) was born in Providence. His father was Elder James Brown (1666-1716), a pastor on the First Baptist Church; his mother was Mary (Harris) Brown. Upon reaching adulthood, Obadiah joined his older brother James Brown II (1698-1739) in the mercantile trade, which included traffic in cocoa, rum, molasses and slaves.

Vernon family. Records, 1738-1829.

Title: Records, 1738-1829.

The material in this collection records imports, exports, and orders of goods generated and/or received by the Vernons. Such products as rum,sugar, molasses, wine, cheese, indigo, nails, glass bottles and flasks, wigs, cotton, cloth, candles, flour, chocolate, coffee, dry goods, and kitchenware are represented. Import fees and percentages received by commission merchants are often recorded. Letters detail such facets of trade as problems with credit, payments lost in the mail, spoilage of food products, and transportation of goods. Other items in the collection document costs associated with operating ships and brigs. Some of the bills and receipts are for personal products needed by members of the Vernon family, including clothing, shoes, lighting equipment, a coffeepot, and items for the kitchen. There are two bills for schools attended by Vernon children.
