The collection consists of manuscripts, photographs, original watercolors, clippings and printed materials. The collection primarily concerns Ms. Post's family in Russia before the Revolution and in the emigration in France and the U.S.A. and to Boris Bakhmeteff who was the ambassador of the Russian provisional government to the United States, later chairman of the Lyon Match company in Long Island City where Ms. Post worked for many years. Materials relating to Boris Bakhmeteff include photographs of his family in Tbilisi, photographs of the opening of the Russian embassy in Washington D.C. in 1917 and a large file of obituaries. Memorabilia of Ms. Post's family begin chronologically with photographs of her grandfather, Nikolaĭ Fedorovich Bekker. Bekker's daughter Vera was an accomplished amateur artist and examples of her original water colors and poems are included, along with reproductions of paintings by her husband Iosif Krachkovskiĭ who was a popular Petersburg society painter around the turn of the century. Their son, Dmitriĭ Krachkovskiĭ wrote under the pen name Klenovskiĭ and was a popular poet in the emigration who published many books of verse, some of which are included in the collection. Also included is Klenovskiĭ's bound manuscript entitled "Stihotvorennii︠a︡", his autograph poems, photocopies of manuscripts, photographs and clippings. Nikolaĭ Bekker's son Nicolas Becker (de Becquère) was a successful artist both in St. Petersburg and on the French Riviera where he painted portraits of the European aristocracy. Reproductions of his paintings are included along with manuscripts of his poems, and miscellaneous biographical information. Materials not relating to the Bakhmeteff or Bekker families include the typescript memoirs of a self-taught Russian peasant named Alekseĭ Savisko who moved to the U.S.A. in 1957 and became a farmer in Maine. The memoirs entitled "Otvet khuliteliam proshlogo Rossii" (In Answer to the Degraders of Russia) describe his family and work on farms and factories in the Ukraine before the Revolution. Savisko defends the tsarist government against its critics and praises its treatment of peasants and workers. Miscellaneous items include a photograph of Nicholas II inspecting the Viborg Regiment, an embroidered collar from the Obshchestovo Pooshchrenii︠a︡ kustarnoĭ promyshlenosti (Home Craft Art Industry) in St. Petersburg, an anonymous watercolor stage design, a small collection of Russian postcards, and examples of Russian currency from the tsarist and provisional governments.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files, printed materials, and memorabilia of Vernadsky. Most of the collection consists of his personal and professional papers, ca. 1918-1973. Sizable groups of materials also concern members of his family, especially his wife Nina; his father, scientist Vladimir I. Vernadskiĭ; his mother, Natalii︠a︡ Vernadskai︠a︡; and his sister Nina V. Toll. There are also included a large number of letters by various persons written to the Vernadskiĭ's in 1888-1896 and in the 1920s and 1930s when they made visits to Europe. A number of files concern George Vernadsky's professional contacts with journals, conferences, organizations, and publishers, in the fields of Russian, Byzantine, and Asian history. Although the manuscripts consist chiefly of George Vernadsky's articles, lectures, essays, books, and notes, there are also items by others. Photographs are chiefly of George and Nina Vernadsky and their friends and relations. Subject files deal primarily with George Vernadsky's professional activities in Europe and America (for instance, "Eurasianism," the Kondakov Institute in Prague, Yale University, and various conferences and associations), and with his parents, other relatives, and many other aspects of his life and career. In addition, there are several boxes of records, primarily 16th and 17th century "stolbt︠s︡y," relating to the history of the Tambov-penza region of Russia; these appear in the collection as "Akty Tambovsko-Penzenskogo krai︠a︡." Besides many boxes of offprints, journals, clippings, and pamphlets on scholarly topics which George Vernadsky collected, printed items mostly concern his and his father's activities.

Correspondence and subject files of Russian-American historian Michael Karpovich include letters from former ministers of the Russian Provisional Government Alexander Kerensky, Aleksandr Guchkov, and the Provisional Government's ambassador to the United States, Boris Bakhmeteff. There are letters from Social Revolutionaries Nikolai Avksentʹev and Vladimir Zenzinov, Menshiviks Boris Nikolaevsky and Nikolaĭ Vol'skiĭ, and extensive correspondence with contemporary historians such as Michael Florinsky, Sergeĭ Pushkarev, George Vernadsky, and Karpovich's students who included Marc Raeff and Richard Pipes. Much of the correspondence concerns Karpovich's involvement in emigre affairs and the promotion of Russian studies in the United States including such institutions as the Bakhmeteff Archive, the "Novyĭ zhurnal" and the Chekhov Publishing House. There is correspondence with prominent authors and literary critics including Mark Aldanov, Ivan Bunin, Alekseĭ Remizov, Gleb Struve and Roman Gulʹ. Of special importance are letters and poems by Vladimir Nabokov. The subject files concern Boris Bakhmeteff, Alexander Kerensky, Vladimir Nabokov and Karpovich's work as editor of Pavel Mili︠u︡kov's books.

These papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, documents, and printed materials. Most of the correspondence concerns Florinsky's publications and editorial work. Among the correspondents are Boris Bakhmeteff, Michael Karpovich, Aleksandr Meyendorff, Bernard Pares, James T. Shotwell, and Dmitriĭ Svi︠a︡topolk-Mirskiĭ: there are one or two items each from John Dewey, Herbert Hoover, Edwin Seligman, and Harry S. Truman. Manuscripts by Florinsky include his "Russia: A Short History," and some minor articles and book reviews. Other manuscripts include a poem by Bernard Pares and a study by Sergeĭ Prokopovich of the Soviet five-year plan of 1946-50; there is also a photograph of Meyendorff. Documents concern Florinsky's career at Columbia and also include book contracts. Printed materials consist chiefly of reviews of his works and reviews he wrote of others' books.

The greater part of the collection concerns the period 1917-22, with a substantial amount of material on the Humanities Fund and Bakhmeteff's friendships with prominent Americans. Cataloged materials include 50 or more letters from John Spargo, Vasilii Maklakov, Ekaterina Kuskova, Frederic Coudert, Georgii L'vov and Michael Karpovich (the last largely concerning the Humanities Fund); there are also a few items by Louis Brandeis, John Foster Dulles, Samuel Gompers, Colonel Edward House, Charles Lindbergh, and Thomas Masaryk. Extensive files of arranged materials include hundreds of letters by Arkadii Zak (who headed the Russian Information Bureau in New York, 1917-22), items to and by Sergei Uget, and official telegrams from 1917-22. There are manuscripts in the collection by Bakhmeteff, Spargo, Uget and Sergei Prokopovich. Subject files chiefly cover the Civil War period, the Paris Peace Conference, the Humanities Fund and Soviet Russia in the early 1920s. Printed materials include pamphlets, journals and clippings. There are also bound reports by different departments of the Russian embassy and mission from 1917 through the 1920s. In addition, the collection contains an oil portrait of Bakhmeteff by the artist Nicolas Becker.
