Title: Letters, 1816-1817.

Letters, original and photocopies, written to parents, brothers, sisters and friend, Morris Birkbeck, while traveling through the United States. He describes the cities he passes through, discussing their people, business, industries and surrounding land and agriculture. After discussing the influx of European goods to America he states that "agriculture is flourishing but commerce is in great confusion". He describes the differences in people from state to state. He relates what he has learned about the "wild animals", bears, panthers, deer and snakes. He tells them of the "ridiculous custom of indiscriminate introduction and handshaking". In a letter to his sisters he describes the differences in the role of the lady of the house in Viginia and Pennsylvania. He met Thomas Jefferson and his family and stayed at Monticello for some time. He describes Jefferson, his dress, his routine, his manner, his house and his slaves. Flower was anti-slavery, but he writes that the treatment of slaves had vastly improved and that Jefferson's slaves were quite happy. He is for emancipation but favors a plan to send all of the free slaves back to Africa to colonize and help civilize the Negroes there. He writes that of all of the country Kentucky and Virginia would be the best place to settle because the manner of the people is more English and they have a higher number of gentlemen than the other states. He does denounce the use of slaves in those states.

Journal kept aboard the boat to America. Landed in New York and relates experience attending a Negro church while there. In Philadelphia he discusses his visit to a prison, the prisoners, the rules and regulations and differences from England. He describes the industry in Pittsburgh and the Germans who inhabit much of Pennsylvania. He discusses the founding of Harmony, Ohio and the beautiful farms of Kentucky. In various cities he lists the prices of items, wages for laborers, cost of services and prices of land. Describes the crops that are grown and the livestock, especially sheep, in which he was especially interested. He also describes the land, mountains, valleys, forests, flowers and trees. He describes the people he meets their homes, families, farms and his own responses to them. He refers to America having "a class of wealthy peasants, not known to us."

Pierce, William D. William D. Pierce journal, 1835-1874 (bulk 1835-1865).

Title: William D. Pierce journal, 1835-1874 (bulk 1835-1865).

Record book kept by William D. Pierce includes Pierce's "Herd Book," containing pedigree and breeding records of his short horn cattle, along with various auction notices. On one of five cattle auction circulars pasted in the book is written a letter from George Renick in reply to Pierce's inquiry about the pedigree of a particular bull. Copy letters, 1835-1862, pertain primarily to sales of wool and Pennock & Pierce's revolving hay and grain horse-rake and include three letters to pioneer George Flower in Illinois. Loose documents kept with the volume include six sheets of breeding records, three engravings of a cow and a bull, a letter of 1845 from Rachel P. Lambern in Kennett Square, Pa., a tax notice for 1863, and a poem honoring Esther Roberts in 1874 on her 82nd birthday.
