Henry Knox Sherrill was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 6, 1890. He was educated at Yale and Episcopal Theological School. He served as an Episcopal clergyman in Massachusetts from 1914-1930. He was elected Bishop of Massachusetts in 1930, serving until 1946. He was Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church from 1947-1958. He held the office of President of the National Council of Churches from 1950-1952, and of the World Council of Churches from 1954-1961. He died on May 11, 1980.
John Boyd Bentley was born in Hampton, Virginia 9 February 1896. He attended the College of William and Mary and served in the U. S. Field Artillery in World War I. Bentley attended the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia He served as an Episcopal clergyman in Alaska and in Williamsburg. He then served as Suffragan Bishop and Bishop of Alaska. From 1947 to 1964, Bentley was Director of Overseas Missions of the Episcopal Church. He died 12 June 1989.

The papers documentHenry Knox Sherrill's career as an Episcopal rector, Bishop of Massachusetts,and Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, his wartime chaplaincy work (inFrance during World War I and as Chairman of the United States GeneralCommission on Chaplains during World War II), his ecumenical leadership asPresident of the National Council of Churches and the World Council ofChurches, and his service to institutions such as Yale University andMassachusetts General Hospital. Henry Williams Sherrill was a graduate of YaleCollege, Union Theological Seminary and Virginia Theological Seminary. He wasan Episcopal priest who served parishes in Michigan and Ohio and for many yearswas chairman of the Cheswick Center, a research and education trust for studyand improvement in nonprofit governance.

Collection provides documentation of Sherrill's career as an Episcopal rector, Bishop of Massachusetts, and Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, his involvement in wartime chaplaincy work (in France during World War I and as Chairman of the United States General Commission on Chaplains during World War II), his ecumenical leadership as President of the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches, and his service to institutions such as Yale University and Massachusetts General Hospital. Official correspondence and documents stemming from these various positions are not present to any great extent. The strength of the collection is its biographical documentation.

There is material relating to Bentley's work in Alaska, including a series of letters to his wife, 1930-1937, describing his travels on the Alaskan frontier. The collection also includes a photograph collection as well as diaries, correspondence, and photographs which chronicle his tours of the Far East in 1949; a world tour, 1959-1960; and tours of Latin America, 1960-1961. There are audio-cassettes of his autobiography.

The papers consist primarily of the correspondence of Edith (Hall) Colgate Washburn and her daughter Mabel Hall Colgate with each other and other family members, including Samuel Colgate Jr. and Henry Bradford Washburn, and friends, mostly about family news, work, health, and travel. They include courtship letters from Colgate to Edith as well as the correspondence of earlier generations. The papers also contain Mabel's diaries and personal papers, including some Winsor School compositions, papers for the Saturday Morning Club and another club, published and unpublished verse, letters to newspapers, depositions regarding her citizenship, and family clippings. They also include material about Brad and Sherry's mountain climbing expeditions. Photograph albums and scrapbooks contain both personal and church-related clippings, letters, photographs, sermons, etc., documenting the family's travels and Colgate's work.
