The collection consists chiefly of correspondence and documents relating to slaves and free blacks residing in Alexandria, Va. Much of it concerns the legality in 1831 of blacks assembling for worship. Another major segment relates to a proposed 1844 repeal of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1793. Single items in the collection deal with runaways, passes, religious gatherings, summonses and sales. A few non-slave items include an 1813 resolution forming a committee of vigilance and an 1839 bond for the keeper of the powder house. Correspondents include Henry Alexander Wise, Edmund Jennings Lee, Joseph Eaches, Benjamin Ogle Tayloe, and William Gilham.

The bulk of the material deals with crop conditions and prices encountered in their various farming ventures in Tennessee, Texas, New York, Arkansas, and Virginia. Includes two letters describing Ku Klux Klan activities in Tennessee, letters referring to the operation of a general store in Goochland Co., by Walter Patterson Duke and his service as an agent for the Southern Fertilizing Co. of Richmond, and many letters from William H. Gilham of that company.
