Recollections by W.A. Day of Catawba County, N.C., concerning his Civil War experiences with the 49th N.C. Regiment in Virginia, in Winder Hospital in Richmond, and in prison at Point Lookout, Md. Included is discussion of Day's feelings when he, as a prisoner at Point Lookout, heard of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and discussion of Christmas during the war. Also included are anecdotes of Reconstruction in Catawba County, with notes about the Ku-Klux Klan; the history of Rehoboth Methodist Church in Catawba County; and other material.

The medical records of H. W. Caffey are contained in a single bound volume. While serving at the Winder Hospital, he recorded the names of his patients, who were Confederate soldiers, in his assigned wards and what treatment and medications that he ordered for the patients. The volume also contains the names, birthplaces, places of residence, and remarks about all conscripts examined while Caffey served as assistant surgeon at Camp Holmes, North Carolina. All travel expenses incurred while performing his duties in North Carolina are also listed.

Letters and documents pertaining to personnel (letters of recommendation, agreements, returns), and patients (reports and lists, discharge papers, request for physical examinations, medical certificates) of various Confederate hospitals. The bulk of the collection pertains to Winder Hospital, although there are some items relating to Chimborazo Hospital, a hospital for Negroes "engaged on work on Richmond Defense," Refuge Hill Hospital, Robertson Hospital, and Williamsburg Seminary Hospital. Many letters are addressed to Dr. Alexander G. Lane, Surgeon-in-charge of the Winder hospital.
