The papers consist of agreements, articles, clippings, correspondence, lists, notes, photographs, poems, receipts, speeches, statements, a survey book and an autograph draft and photocopy of the "South Carolina Exposition." Basically the correspondence is to and from Calhoun, but it also includes letters to and from other members of the family. The correspondence covers in addition to information on the life of the family, thecondition of crops, the sale of rice, and mining the political concerns of the writers including the annexation of Texas, banking, construction of railroads, the war with Mexico, nullification, presidential candidates, political parties, transportation, the slavery question, state rights, tariffs, and other issues of the day. A group of miscellaneous material includes agreements, clippings, handwritten copies of documents concerning the slave trade, settlement of claims and other foreign policy matters, receipts, and statements. After Calhoun's death, correspondence and items related to Calhoun and small collections of Calhoun family members' papers were added to the collection. The posthumous correspondence includes letters of condolence to family members following the death of John C. Calhoun; there is also correspondence pertaining to the editing of Calhoun's manuscripts pertaining to his views on government as well as letters of who should write a biography of Calhoun. The "Posthumous Miscellaneous" material includes such items as lists and indexes of Calhoun letters at Clemson by William Pinckney Starke and others; Carl L. Epting's correspondence regarding John C. Calhoun; information about Dumbarton Oaks and Fort Hill; a photograph of Fort Hill c. 1880; writings of A.G. Holmes on John C. Calhoun; and an "Order of Procession for escorting the remains of the Honorable John C. Calhoun; The "Related Material" consists of small collections of papers of other Calhoun family members kept with the Papers and include a survey book (1784-1792) of John Calhoun's father, Patrick Calhoun; a list of John Ewing Colhoun's lands, 1789; correspondence to Floride Colhoun, 1802-1804; and the A. Ransom Calhoun papers, 1853-1862.

Title: Letter, 1837 Nov. 4, Pendleton, S.C., to Patrick Calhoun, West Point, N.Y.

Letter of S.E. Maxwell, expressing pleasure at having received a letter from his boyhood friend, Patrick Calhoun (1821-1858), who was enrolled at the United States Military Academy; Calhoun was the son of John C. Calhoun (1782-1850). Maxwell comments on the lack of fun since Calhoun left Pendleton, S.C., for West Point, N.Y.; mentions the marriage of Thomas Cherry scheduled for Tuesday night, and the outcome of [horse] races between competitors from Pendleton and Greenville, S.C., in which Maxwell laments that "Greenville won all the money."

Calhoun, Patrick. Patrick Calhoun papers, 1844-1852.

Letter, 27 July 1845, from Lieut. Calhoun, to his father, John C. Calhoun, documents the younger Calhoun's role in the Mexican War, when in 1845, he was at western department command headquarters in New Orleans, serving as aide-de-camp to Brevet Major General Edmund Pendleton Gaines. Gaines had hoped to leave New Orleans by mid-July, but had remained until "the Troop destined for Texas" could sail. "Gen. Gaines intended at one time to review them prior to their embarcation, indeed ground had been selected near the city in which to review," although he abandoned this plan when 61-year old Col. [Josiah H.] Vose fell dead, presumably from the heat. Calhoun also expresses reservations of attempts to enter battle with few troops, "Unless the Government at Washington is fully informed upon this subject, it is... acting strangely and without proper forethought in sending in so small and ill appointed a force...." Account book, 1852, of quartermaster department dating to Calhoun's military service at Fort Lincoln, Texas, showing equipment and provisions; remainder of volume used for writing exercises. [Fort Lincoln was established, 1849, on the frontier in west central Medina County, Tx., as part of a permanent federal frontier defense across Texas following the Mexican War. Companies E and G of the Eighth United States Infantry Regiment, commanded by Maj. James Longstreet, defended settlers and the nearby trade route. Fort Lincoln was abandoned on 20 July 1852, after the frontier line had advanced westward. Papers, 1844-1852 and undated, consist of orders re his military service, application for bounty land based on his service in the Mexican War, with number and date of warrant issued for 160 acres; and printed sketch of his Army career.

Calhoun, John Caldwell, 1823-1855. Letter, (1838) Jan. 6 to Patrick Calhoun.

Title: Letter, (1838) Jan. 6 to Patrick Calhoun.

Letter, 6 Jan.1838, of John C[aldwell] Calhoun (1823-1855), son of South Carolina's elder statesman, to his older brother P[atrick] notes that he had not written earlier due to his recent travels. Calhoun comments on his post-Christmas holiday trip to Abbeville Court House, S.C., and visits to Uncle Patrick's and Cousin Patrick's. "Mr. Wayland," the letter goes on to say, "has quit keeping school," and Mr. Kennedy was to start teaching on the first of February. Writing as he was from Millwood, plantation home of James Edward Colhoun, young Calhoun knew that Patrick would "want to know how we got down" and notes that they "came down in a cart." Game was plentiful according to Calhoun, and he had "killed ten pigeons this year with the old shot gun."

Letter from R. Hackett to former schoolmate, Patrick Calhoun ( 1821-1858), noting Calhoun's recent arrival as a cadet at USMA-West Point, the current state of affairs at Pendleton Academy, and work of principal Thomas Wayland. Hackett suggests that he might join Calhoun at West Point the following spring and questions how he likes "the Yankee boys."
