Title: Richards family correspondence, 1836-1854.

This small group consists of photocopies of letters between members of the Richards family. Subjects covered include the Haun's Mill Massacre in 1838, the persecutions of Mormons; and the movement of Mormons from Kirtland, Ohio to Missouri and then onto Illinois. Nine of the original letters are located at the Harold B. Lee Library, Special Collections, Brigham Young University; one is at the Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscript Library, Yale University; and the locations of the remaining original documents are unknown.

Handwritten-and-signed letter. Greene made general reference to recent difficulties and encouraged Richards to "continue in the ministry of the word." A clerical note penciled on the verso of the letter gives the date, 1 April 1839. Another clerical note refers to a typewritten transcript of the letter having been made on 24 September 1894.

He also writes about the Mormon war, relatives in the West, his faith, the fertility of the country, and his return to Illinois Town, where he worked cutting timber.
