Discusses his background and skiing. At age 25 he started skiing seriously, entering tournaments, and winning a championship. He was drafted into the Army in June of 1941 and was stationed at Fort Lewis where he was assigned to teach officers how to ski. He taught men to ski at Camp Hale and in Michigan. He was an instructor for his entire time in the army and was discharged in December of 1945.

Vigil, Andres. Oral History [sound recording].

Discusses signing up for the 10th Mountain troops at the beginning of the war, about training and about being assigned to the HQ Company. He arrives at Camp Hale after Christmas of 1943 for mountain training and ski instruction. He serves on Kiska and describes the conditions and the weather there. He goes to Camp Carson for mountain climbing training and transfers to Camp Hale. He's sent to Italy and describes the actions on Mt. Belvedere, the taking of prisoners, the minefields, and the stringing of communications wires. He talks about Italian Partisan activities and about contact with German soldiers. After Mt. Belvedere they proceed to the Apennines and then to the Po Vally. He talks about Lake Garda and then talks about being detained in Italy when troubles arise in Yugoslavia. He arrives back home on August 2nd and talks about post war work on ranches, and working as a mountain guide.

Dwyer, Charles engineer. Oral History [sound recording].

Discusses skiing at an early age, about being in the Navy, and about working as a structural engineer. He worked with the US Forest Service and was involved in the construction of ski lifts.

Heron, Robert engineer. Oral History [sound recording].

Discusses working with engineering firms that were constructing ski lifts and working on the lifts at Camp Hale (a training camp for the 10th Mountain Division). He talks about various other projects and discusses the regulations that were established in the 1960s.

Woodward, John B. 1915-. Oral History [sound recording].

Discusses some biographical information before he talks about the Army. He took ROTC at the University of Washington and entered the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1940. He talks about giving some ski instruction, including cross-country, and about driving to Colorado to prepare for the influx of new recruits in the fall of 1941. During the bulk of the tape he talks about uniforms, boots, skis and tents. .

Stewart, Thomas B. Oral History [sound recording].

Discusses how he became an avid skier in college. When he joined the army he was assigned to the 162nd Infantry at Fort Lewis. Because of a letter he wrote to a General he was assigned to Sitka, Alaska as a guard for a secret shipment of radar equipment. As a college graduate he was accepted for Officer Candidate School and was sent to Fort Benning. He was then assigned to the 87th Infantry in June of 1942. He served many places including Camp Hale. There the 87th was preparing to go to Alaska. When the 87th arrived on Kiska Island the Japanese had already left but because of booby traps and the weather, conditions were grueling. He eventually served in Italy, including serving with a troop that had a ski combat patrol ambushed. There were numerous casualties, but Steward, himself, was assigned to the headquarter company at the time.

Lunday, Philip A. Oral History [sound recording].

Discusses being drafted, going through 2 basic trainings and serving on various bases before being trained as a mechanic and being transferred to the 10th Mountain Division. He was assigned to D Company of the 126th Engineers, which functioned to support the infantry. He landed in Naples in January and went to Pisa. It was his duty to maintain the tramway engines. He says the biggest problem was the trucks having flat tires because of the shrapnel on the roads. He also tells a story of a tractor driver that accidentally backed his vehicle off a cliff while trying to evade German artillery fire. The driver jumped and survived. He did not have the winter and mountain training of many of the 10th Mountain troops, so his experience is different from many others.

Morrell, Nathan E. Oral History [sound recording].

Discusses how he became a skier at an early age, becoming a teacher at age 16. He volunteered for the army at age 18 in January of 1943 and was sent to Camp Hale. At Hale he became a ski instructor and a rock-climbing instructor. Later he served in West Virginia where he taught rock climbing and survival. He transferred to Camp Swift on July 4, 1944. From there he went to Naples and eventually to Pisa. He served as a stretcher-bearer during the fighting, often transporting stretchers over varying terrain. His company suffered only 4 wounded and no one was killed. He eventually crossed the Po River and was the only person in his boat that knew how to paddle. He talks about the capture of a prominent fascist and about the looting of the villa, as well as how enemy soldiers fired upon medics even though they were supposed to be treated as neutrals.
