Title: Frank Conroy manuscripts.

Frank Conroy, director of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, has placed on deposit the holograph manuscripts of two of his books, Stop-time (1967) and Body & soul (1993). Some pages from the Stop-time manuscript have been digitized and can be viewed at http://www.uiowa.edu/~iww/conroy.htm. Conroy has also pointed out the remarkable similarity between the two versions (draft 1 and draft 2) of the second chapter of Body & soul that are present here: the first six pages of his first draft went missing and he was forced to rewrite them from memory. The pages were recovered much later and exhibit both overall similarity and interesting differences. Also available in the collection is a photocopy typescript of a short story, "My Harlem."

Sally Mary Caroline Belfrage (1936-1994) was an independent leftist, world-traveling journalist, and writer born in Hollywood, California. She was the daughter of Cedric Belfrage and Molly Castle, two radical British writers. Her books include: ; ; and . The collection includes Belfrage's correspondence, manuscripts and documentation of her creative and political activities. Portions of the collection are closed until 2021 (see Access Restrictions note). The Records of the Iowa Writers' Workshop consist of twelve series. Series I, Student Coursework, consists of photocopies of students' works arranged by semester and class section within each semester. It is the largest series in the collection, dating from Fall 1965 to the present. Note that a few of the semesters are filed out of chronological sequence. Series II, Award Competitions, consists of writing entries from individuals vying for scholarships and other awards. Series III, Students and Alumni, consists of files containing correspondence, applications, and other material, arranged alphabetically by name of individual. Restricted access. Series IV, Faculty, is arranged alphabetically by name of individual. Restricted access. Series V, Director's Files, consists of correspondence and other material created and received by the Office of the Director. Restricted access. Series VI, Administrative Files. Restricted access. Series VII, Accepted; Not Coming. Restricted access. Series VIII, Rejected Applicants' Evaluation Sheets. Restricted access. Series IX, Applicants' Letters of Recommendation. Restricted access. Series X, Ephemera, includes posters and other printed matter, dating from 1982 to present. Series XI, Stephen Wilbers Project, consists of correspondence and interview notes prepared by an alumnus of the Workshop who prepared a history of the program in 1980. Series XII, Jean Wylder Project, consists of survey responses obtained from numerous alumni during the early 1970s as part of a history project. The responses are arranged by era of attendance/graduation.

Series I contains diaries (some are closed until 2021), notebooks, and appointment/address books, covering her entire literary career, as well as memorabilia, mostly from her youth. Series II, Correspondence, includes carbons of most of her own letters. There is voluminous correspondence with Cedric Belfrage, Molly Castle, Virginia Durr, Joanne Grant, John Gunther. Jessica Mitford, Kathy Perutz, Bernard Pomerance (closed until 2021), Benjamin Sonnenburg, and Michael Train. Other significant and/or frequent correspondents include Alan Arkin, Judith Brandt, Kim Chernin, Alexander Cockburn, Frank Conroy, George Feifer, Albert Finney, Alger Hiss, Millard Lampell, Staughton Lynd, Stewart Mott, Vladimir Pozner, Zell Rabin, Muriel Rukeyser, Harrison Salisbury, Kwame Ture, Fred Wiseman, and Sol Yurick. Series III contains manuscripts, correspondence, interviews, clippings, and other materials that document the researching, writing, publication and reception of Belfrage's five books, including transcripts of some sixty interviews conducted for The Crack. There are also like materials for her shorter writings, and a set of unpublished and published writings by others, principally Judith Brandt. Series IV documents Belfrage's involvement in the Greenham Common, a 1980s feminist peace encampment in England, as well as other political and feminist activities. Series V contains FBI files on Sally and Cedric Belfrage and on Nathan Gregory Silvermaster (during World War II, he was employed by the U.S. Board of Economic Warfare, and was later accused of being a Soviet spy).
