Bulstrode, Richard, Sir, 1610-1711. [Letterbook], [1676-1682].
Title:
[Letterbook], [1676-1682].
Manuscript, in several hands, of a collection of copies of several hundred letters addressed to Richard Bulstrode by other diplomats while he was British envoy at Brussels and apprising him of the political situation in the countries in which they were stationed. The contents include 45 letters from Sir William Godolphin, ambassador at Madrid, dated 1676-79; 74 letters from Henry Savile, envoy at Paris, dated 1679-82; 50 letters from Sir Leoline Jenkins, envoy at Nijmegen, dated 1673-79; and 20 letters from Thomas Chudleigh, envoy at Nijmegen, dated 1676-78. The letters are followed, in another hand, by a collection of about a dozen poems titled "English poems written by Sir Richard Bulstrode upon severall occasions," many of them religious or sentimental. Some of the poems are not actually by Bulstrode, including An epitaph upon husband and wife by Richard Crashaw and an anagram on Mary's name by George Herbert. The collection does, however, includes some of Bulstrode's Latin poetry.
