The collection concerns economic conditions, politics, and international events before the Civil War; antebellum education in Virginia; commodity and land prices; the production of hemp and tobacco; Hampden-Sydney College (1834); and the Chicago fire (1871).

Title: Negro books of the Massie family 1823-1863.

One volume contains information on slaves owned by the family, giving name, parentage, date of birth and occasionally status (deceased, sold). The oldest slave recorded was born in 1739. In a few instances, fathers are listed as well as mothers. The volume also lists slaves, stock, and farm tools, owned in the years 1783, 1785, 1786, 1789, 1790, and 1793. Most of the information in the volume appears to be compiled from sources not now present. The second volume contains accounts of individual slaves with their master, 1850-1863. Slaves received credit for extra work or work done for people outside the Massie family. Purchases made by the slaves against their earnings include food, clothing and whiskey. Of interest are accounts for slaves who were skilled workers including William, a cooper, Brock, Edmund and Julius, blacksmiths, and Squire and Dan, carpenters.

The collection includes photostatic copies of estate inventories and maps for the Massie's Pharsalia plantation, recollections of the major's service in the Continental Army of Virginia, 1775-1781, containing an account of the Battle of Monmouth, and maps and account books for a plantation.
