Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
Communism Collection, 1916-1970 (bulk 1935-1960).
The Communism Collection consists of pamphlets, correspondence, journals, newsletters, organizational records, and newspaper clippings documenting women's involvement in socialist and communist movements in the United States, United Kingdom, and internationally, from the 1910s to the 1970s. Included are pamphlets and articles by and about individuals such as Ella Reeve Bloor, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Dolores (Pasionaria) Ibarruri, Zelda Kahan, Rosa Luxembourg, Betty Millard, Anna Louise Strong, and Clara Zetkin. There are also newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and fliers on topics such as the U.S. Communist Party's newspaper the Daily Worker, Communism in Great Britain, the Palmer raids, communism in the United States, and women and communism. These reflect both pro- and anti-communist perspectives on the activities of Communists and on politics in general. A large portion of material relates to the Women's International Democratic Federation and its American affiliate the Congress of American Women, documenting their activities and political perspectives at the local, national, and international levels. Documents generated by the Congress of American Women and its detractors, together illustrate the communists' efforts to organize a post-World War II women's movement and anti-communists' efforts to thwart them.

Spanish Civil War collection photographs [picture]. 1937-1939.
Photographs, photomechanical prints, posters, and postcards related to the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. The materials were collected by David Gordon who participated in the war as a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. The majority of the photos show images of the military experience of the international brigades depicting various important places of battle and headquarters; military personnel; military life; camp life; and war damage. The posters and postcards depict a number of the same themes and have various artists, including José Bardasano and Jose Renau in common. The posters and postcards address issues such as: Propaganda of the P.S.U and U.G.T.; Support of the Popular Front and the Republican Army; Health and Hygiene; Literacy and Culture; Role of the International Brigades and international support of the Republican forces; and various important events and battles in the unfolding of the Spanish Civil War.
