Kearny's conquest of New Mexico, the Mexican War, her experiences of trail and pioneer life, hunting, and encounters with Indians. The first 49 pages of the journal consist of copied and original poetry.

Bradford Prince; business and personal papers of Aloys Scheurich; business papers of Adolph and Alexander Gusdorf; and documents concerning the Las Animas, Sangre de Cristo, and Maxwell land grants. Also within the collection are photographs a various family members, one photograph of Kit Carson, one photograph of Judge William Hayes Pope, and one photograph of Santa Fe circa. 1895.

Series II includes materials on the launching of the U.S.S. Santa Fe in 1942; correspondence and photographs from 1947-1949 concerning Gerald Cassidy's "Colorado Murals"; and a newspaper clipping about Ernest Seton Thompson's 1938 lecture tour. Two postcards to the Cassidys from Fanny Bandelier were later added to this collection.

Summary: Collection consists of New Mexico historical documents, collected by Read, and Read's personal papers (1704-1926). Series I, indexed and described by Read, represents the bulk of the collection and roughly covers the fifty years between the last two decades of the Spanish colonial period and the first decade of the territroial period (1804-1854). This series is rich in the correspondence of Manuel Alvarez (1839-1850), a Santa Fe merchant who also served as U.S. Consul. Subjects reflected in Alvarez's correspondence with various New Mexico politicians and merchants are: military affairs including the Chimayo Rebellion (1837), the United States invasion of New Mexico (1846), and Indian relations; political affairs including relations with Texas, the assassination of Governor Charles Bent (1847), and the Gadsden Purchase; economic affairs including the Santa Fe Trail; and religious affairs including Padre Antonio Jose Martinez's involvement in politics and the Penitentes. Also included are official military, government, and religious documents. Series II consists of the papers of several New Mexico families, wills, estate records, World War I records, Manuel Alvarez's letterbook and diary, Padre Martinez's publications, and Read's private papers, manuscripts, and publications.

This collection consists of disparate manuscripts from 19th century New Mexico, a collection of 96 pamphlets on the 1888-1897 silver question, and personal papers of Le Baron Bradford Prince. Box 1 contains 67 pamphlets on the 1888-1897 silver question. Box 1 also contains English and Spanish language documents, including letters, pertaining to nineteenth century New Mexico, which were donated by Mr. W.B. Prince, son of L. Bradford Prince, and Dr. Frank Reeve. One letter to Manuel Alvarez from William Bent concerns a priest's complaints about stolen sheep. Among the Spanish language documents is an official statement signed by the Mexican Governor, Mariano Martinez, regarding the execution of the Ute chief, Panasiyave (also spelled Panesiyah.) Two documents, signed by Donaciano Vigil, Secretary of the Territory, are a proclamation referring the Taos insurrection in which Governor Charles Bent was assassinated, 1847, and a circular concerning the assassination of Governor Bent during the Taos insurrection. There is also a treaty dated 1827 between Mexico and the Comanche. Box 2 contains personal papers of Prince, and more silver question pamphlets, which were purchased and added to the collection. Personal papers include family, business, and political correspondence, invitations to the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition and to a dinner/dance given by the Society of Mayflower Descendants, as well as a circular for the lecture series, "Romance of the South West" given by Prince. The oversized folder contains a publicity poster for L. Bradford Prince's book, History of New Mexico, dated 1883.

The materials are in Spanish some of which include translations. The items were created mainly by New Mexican government officials and persons connected with local and territorial governments of that area. The majority of the documents deal with the Mexican period (1840-1847) of New Mexico history, and the background to that era. The collection also relates to Mexican policies in New Mexico, relations with Indians (chiefly Apaches) in New Mexico and Chihuahua, the war with Mexico (1846-1848), the colonization of New Mexico, the history of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and New Mexico during its territorial period. Creators include: Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, president of Mexico; Francisco Fernandes de La Cueva Enriquez, 34th viceroy of New Spain; Miguel Otero, territorial representative to the United States Congress for New Mexico; Bradford L. Price, governor of New Mexico; Joab Houghton, judge in New Mexico; Charles Bend, governor of New Mexico; Juan Bautista de Anza, governor of New Mexico; Juan de Onate, a colonizer of New Mexico; and Diego de Vargas, governor of El Paso and colonizer in New Mexico.
