Title: Women in New Mexico Collection

In 1976 the Albuquerque chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) held an exhibit at The Albuquerque Museum to honor the contributions of women to the history, culture, and politics of New Mexico. The materials gathered by members of the AAUW in Albuquerque to determine which of the over one hundred women nominated were to be included in the exhibit form the core of this collection. The collection contains correspondence, forms, audio CDs, clippings, and published articles on the women nominated by AAUW members, including explanations of why they were nominated and biographical information on the nominees. All of the women were 19th and 20th century women who were not all New Mexico natives, but who lived here and contributed to the artistic, political, and educational life of the state. Ultimately, thirteen women were chosen for the exhibit. Biographical information, clippings, and recorded interviews with those women comprise folders 5-22. Folders 25-82 contain biographical information and clippings about fifty-six women who were nominated, but not included in the exhibit. The biographical folders are arranged in alphabetical order. Newspaper clippings and publicity for the 1976 exhibit are also included in the collection. The last folder in the collection has brief information about eighty women nominated by the New Mexico Women's Political Caucus as women of note in the 1980s. Other biographical materials on New Mexico women may be added to this collection in the future.

Dorothy Woodward Memorial Penitente Collection,

Title: Dorothy Woodward Memorial Penitente Collection,

Collection consists of Woodward's personal papers and research materials collected and created in the process of the publication of her doctoral thesis and of various articles on the Penitentes (a grassroots Catholic group) of Northern New Mexico. Includes correspondence with various persons and institutions (1933-1949), two notebooks and a diary (1925-1928), and a scrapbook (1938). Notebooks and diary pertain to Woodward's travels to Europe and Hobbs, New Mexico. Research materials consist of copies of documents from the Archivo General de la Nacional and various other repositories, publications and journals (1884-1956), maps, pamphlets, newspapers, notes, bibliographies, and card files. Publications include works by Charles F. Lummis. Subjects discussed are the Penitentes, the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi, religious customs in Spain and New Mexico, alabados (hymns), and other related topics. Some materials are in Spanish, French, Finnish, or German with some English translations.

Dorothy Woodward Photograph Collection

Title: Dorothy Woodward Photograph Collection

This collection consists of mounted photographic prints taken in Mexico between approximately 1895 and 1909. Several photographers are represented, but the majority of images are by C.B. Waite, an Australian- born photographer who worked in Mexico and California. Other photographers represented are Cox & Carmichael, A. Briquet, and Scott (probably Winnfield Scott, a photographer who worked in Mexico around 1900). The photographs are captioned on front and many have printed text on back of mounts that suggests that they were made for sale to tourists. Subject representation is broad, including: identified civic and religious buildings, town views, occupations and activities, monuments and gardens, tropical flora, Precolumbian sites and artifacts, historical sites and reproductive prints of famous persons in Mexico's history. Market scenes and "typical" or distinctive aspects of Mexican life are included. The photographs are sharp, well-composed and preserved. Unusual images of note are: a pauper's funeral car, game cocks in baskets for transport, and a woman penitent on her knees at Monte Sacro in Amecameca.

There are three folders of material in this collection. Folder 1 contains the meeting agenda for the Organization of American States, Inter-American Cultural Council and the studies to be discussed at their meeting in Lima, Peru, 1956. Most items are in Spanish, some in English, Portuguese and French. Folder 2 contains material for the Colegio Internacional de Estudios Luso-Brasileiros sponsored by the Library of Congress and Vanderbilt University, October 18-21, 1950. There are the opening remarks by Dr. Pedro Theotinio Pereira, President of the Portuguese Delegation, a list of participants, including Dr. Woodward, and English translations of papers presented in Portuguese at the colloquium. The third folder has Spanish and English material of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) Regional Conference on Free and Compulsory Education in Latin America. This folder also contains material from the Western Regional Conference of April 10, 1957 in San Francisco, California on the topic of adult education in the United States.
