The first volume is Cator's 1792 Oct. 18 response to a complaint by Thrale's widow Hester Lynch Piozzi and her second husband Gabriele Mario Piozzi, in which they alleged that he had provided them with incomplete and inaccurate information concerning the estate. In the response, Cator provides a detailed narrative of his handling of the Thrale estate, including transcripts of a release from the Piozzis to Cator dated 1787 May 3 (pp. 62-67) and a related schedule of accounts (pp. 91-99). It is signed by Cator on p. 90, by witness Edward Montagu (p. 1), and by James Trower (transcriber?) (p. 90). The second volume is Cator's 1793 Nov. 21 response (with fellow executor Jeremiah Crutchley) to a complaint from Henry Thrale's youngest daughter Cecilia (later Cecilia Mostyn), then a minor, filed by her advisor Bertie Greatheed. In the response, Cator expands on his narrative of his handling of the Thrale estate, including transcripts of schedule of accounts through 1785 Sept. (pp. 130-169), June 1787 (pp. 170-185), 1792 July (pp. 186-206), 1793 Mar. (pp. 206-212), and 1793 Aug. (pp. 213-237). It is signed by Cator and Crutchley on p. 129, by witness John Ord (p. 1), and by James Trower (transcriber?) (p. 129). A payment from the estate to "Gabriel Piozzi, music master" is listed on p. 142.

This collection consists of seventeen letters from Hester Lynch Piozzi to Fanny Burney (annotated by Burney), 1778-1784; one to Fanny Burney's father Charles Burney, 1778; and two to Fanny Burney's nephew Clement Robert Francis, 1811 and 1816. Many of the letters discuss Samuel Johnson, and two refer to Mrs. Thrale's romance with her future husband Gabriel Piozzi.

This collection consists of letters sent and received by Hester Lynch Piozzi, with a wide variety of correspondents. The letters were collected gradually by Donald and Mary Hyde on the autograph market over a long period of time, and do not constitute a complete archive. 117 different correspondents are represented, with a total of 182 letters: 115 written by Piozzi, and 67 received. The collection includes seven letters to Samuel Johnson, including two versions of the important 1784 June 30 letter informing him of her impending marriage to Gabriel Piozzi, and her final 1784 July 4 letter to Johnson, essentially terminating their long friendship. The collection includes correspondence with other key members of the Johnsonian circle: one letter from Giuseppe Baretti; five letters to James Boswell; four letters to Charles Burney; five letters to Fanny Burney; one letter from Elizabeth Montagu; and one letter from Sir Joshua Reynolds. Many of the other letters also mention Johnson. Several other frequent correspondents are represented in the collection. Included are six letters to Reynold Davies, tutor of her adopted son John Salusbury Piozzi Salusbury; seven letters to the Rev. George Henry Glasse; and eight letters to Penelope Sophia Weston Pennington.
