Title: Papers of William Henry Beatty, 1856-1858, 1905.

The papers contain six letters written from the University of Virginia in 1856-57 to his grandmother Sarah Beatty, wife of Adam Beatty of Washington, Kentucky. Beatty describes his arrival at the University, search for housing, the weather, health, exams, the Columbian and Washington societies, student deaths during the typhoid epidemic, 1857-1858, the student amusement of dislocating joints, and his desire for another year of study before beginning law. In addition he conveys news of his parents and sisters in California, including his father's firm of Robinson, Beatty and Botts. With these is a 1905 letter to his cousin John [Quisenberry] concerning some business or legal help the latter had sought, and a cabinet card photograph of Beatty.

Portraits by Laura Adams Armer of family and community members, many of them well known. Included are: Sidney Armer; the Chabot family children; David Farguharson, architect; W.H. Beatty, chief justice of the California supreme court; two members of the Toklas family; Lewis F. Cockroft of the Oceanic Steamship Company; and Austin Lewis, the Socialist party candidate for governor of California in 1906. Includes many photos of artists and writers, such as Arthur Matthews, Anne Bremer, Boardman Robinson, and Royal Cortissoz. There are also portraits of photographers William Dassonville and Oscar Maurer, and sculptor Robert Aitken.

Title: William H. Beatty letter to his Uncle Adam Beatty, 23 October 1821.

Short letter from William H. Beatty of Baltimore, Maryland to his Uncle Adam Beatty in Washington, Kentucky. Beatty writes that accounts from England indicate that the weather has caused considerable damage to the wheat crop. As a result, he notes that advanced prices are being paid for old wheat and flour. In concluding, Beatty writes that "Kentucky tobacco has not improved since mine of 18 Sept."
