Papers of James D'Wolf Lovett contain letters written to Lovett regarding his book, "Old Boston Boys and the Games They Played," on the history of amateur, school, and college-level sports in Boston. Correspondence from members of Lovett's baseball team, the Lowell Nine, among them Gerrit Smith Miller, as well as with Albert G. Spalding, Winthrop S. Scudder, and Henry Chadwick, dicusses the history of baseball and provides anecdotes of the game and "Boston Boys." Also, clippings and reviews of the book; a typewritten paper by Lovett reminiscing about his childhood on Beacon Hill, Boston (1833); letters regarding the Oneida Football Club of Boston, the first amateur football club in the United States; and about a monument to the club erected on the Boston Common. Additional correspondents include Samuel Cabot, Francis G. Peabody, and Henry Cabot Lodge.

Title: Albert Spalding Scrapbooks : scrapbooks, 1904-1908.

A collection of two scrapbooks, created by the Spalding Commission, a commission set up with the intent to find the origins of baseball, from 1904-1908. These scrapbooks contain some newspaper articles and correspondence between the members of the commission themselves, and what they collected from their correspondence with outside sources. All material relates to the origin of baseball. Items of note in volume 2 include two letters from Abner Graves, who wrote the commission from Colorado claiming that Abner Doubleday invented baseball in Cooperstown, NY, in 1839; a diagram by Albert Spalding showing his theory on the evolution of the game.

Papers of Frederick E. Long, treasurer of both the Boston Base Ball Club (ca. 1871-1888) and the Boston Base Ball Players' League Club (1890). The collection is comprised of records and correspondence relating to the operation of the baseball clubs, with the bulk of the material consisting of financial and administrative records. Collection highlights include: letters from manager Harry Wright, which give first-hand accounts of many Boston games, and also highlight the problems confronting a nineteeth-century baseball manager; a series of letters between Long and Albert Goodwill Spalding revealing Long's efforts to use Spalding as a proxy to obtain stock in the Boston club; and letters from Boston Players' League scouts John Morrill and Arthur Dixwell venting their frustration with Mike "King" Kelly's efforts to sign players for the team in competition with their efforts. The effort to obtain Mike Kelly for the Boston Players' League team at a salary of $10,000 is also briefly documented. Other records document player contracts, player negotiations, and hiring decisions, and stockholder relations. The records of the Players' League team focus on the issues involved in setting up a team, including hiring players, constructing a stadium, and negotiating concessions contracts. A small number of news clippings describing Boston baseball games are also part of the collection.

The banquet held on December 18, 1888, was held to honor the American baseball players who traveled around the world under the auspices of A.G. Spalding. The teams played on December 15, 17 and 18 in Sydney before continuing thier voyage. Among those playing were Cap Anson, Ed Hanlon, John M. Ward, Jimmy Fogerty, and John Tener. The banquet program is two colors with an engraving done by John A. Lowell & Co. of Boston, MA.; printed by John Scott & Co. of Sydney.

This collection contains ephemera related to baseball's world tours of 1888-1889 and 1913-1914. Albert Goodwill Spalding initiated the first world tour in 1888, taking his Chicago White Stockings and the All-American Team "round the world" to bring baseball to an international audience and promote the Spalding Brothers' business interests. On the tour's twenty-fifth anniversary, Charles Comiskey and John McGraw took the Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants on a similar tour. The collection mainly consists of menus, newspaper clippings, and programs.
