Title: College of Charleston archives, 1785-1970.

The Archives of the College of Charleston is divided into two parts: (1) a historical series of records covering the period from 1785-June 1970 and (2) current records from July 1970 to the present. This historical series includes records of the creation of the College primarily as an academy in 1785, of its reorganization and of the adoption of a comprehensive college curriculum in 1824 and 1825, of its existence as a municipal college from 1837 to 1949; and of its separate existence as a private institution from 1949 until it became a state institution on July 1, 1970. The minutes of the Trustees are complete from 1785 through the present. Among the Presidents of the Trustees who are best represented in the historical records are Robert Smith from 1786-1789, Mitchell King from 1847-1862, and M. Rutledge Rivers from 1925-1940. Another trustee who is well represented is the artist and historian Charles Fraser (Secretary and Treasurer from 1817-1855). Few presidential papers exist before 1863, but the records of presidents are essentially complete or nearly so from 1897 to 1968. The three presidents who served during this period were Harrison Randolph from 1897-1942, George Daniel Grice from 1942-1966, and Walter Raleigh Coppedge from 1966-1968. (All of President Theodore S. Stern's papers are kept together in the post-1970 record group). The minutes of the trustees and other records also provide substantial informaiton about earlier Presidents including Robert Smith from 1790-1797, Jasper Adams from 1825-1836, and Nathaniel Russell Middleton from 1857-1880. The faculty minutes are complete from 1841 through the present. Among the members of the faculty who are best represented in the historical records are John Bachman (Natural History, 1848-1853), Thomas della Torre (Latin and Greek, 1898-1923), James Harold Easterby (History, 1920-1952), Louis R. Gibbes (Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, 1838-1892), Lancelot Minor Harris (1898-1941), Francis S. Holmes (Geology and Natural History and head of the Museum, 1850-1869), Horatio Hughes (Chemistry, 1923-1950), Gabriel E. Manigault (Natural History and Geology and head of the Museum, 1873-1899), John McCrady (Mathematics, 1855-1861 and 1865-1873), James Warley Miles (History of Intelectual Philosophy and Greed Literature, 1850-1854 and 1866-1871), and Frederick Adolphus Porcher (History and Belles Lettres, 1848-1888). Among the most comprehensive sets of records are financial records, library accession records (including inventories of several large Ante-bellum libraries which have survived nearly intact), and records of the Charleston Museum while it was part of the College from 1850-1915. The most extensive set of student records was kept by the Chrestomathic Literary Society from 1848-1957.

Chiefly correspondence along with specimen lists, resolutions, clippings, printed material, and other papers relating primarily to Gibbes's career as professor of astronomy, mathematics, and physics at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Includes his correspondence with other scientists on the subjects of astronomy, botany, chemistry, geology, meteorology, physics, and zoology. Other subjects relate to the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Smithsonian Institution.

The album contains 44 black and white photographs of members of the Alumni Association of the College of Charleston. The album was prepared by Dr. Gabriel E. Manigault and presented to the Alumni Association by Charles Manigault in June 1900.

Ravenel family. Ravenel family papers, 1746-1941.

Title: Ravenel family papers, 1746-1941.

Papers consist of correspondence, writings, financial records, scrapbooks, and other items. Included are the papers of Edmund Ravenel (1797-1871) and William Ravenel (1806-1888). Correspondence (1882-1941), mostly that of Rose Pringle Ravenel, but also other Ravenel family members and friends, concerns family and social matters, family estates, Ravenel genealogy, business affairs, and other matters. Included are letters of William Ravenel (1806-1888) and others regarding a family portrait (miniature) taken by a Union soldier in Cheraw (S.C.) during the Civil War. Correspondents of Rose P. Ravenel include Gabriel E. Manigault, Robert C. Winthrop, Yates Snowden, Owen Wister, and others. Writings (ca. 1890-1940) are mainly those of Rose P. Ravenel and include manuscripts of Gullah stories about Brer Rabbit and Brer Wolf, anecdotes about African Americans, manuscript of and notes for "Some Churches in Colonial Times In and Near Charleston," poems, and reminiscences. Also included are essays (apparently school exercises on various subjects) and a speech (1930). Financial records consist of an account book (1806-1807) of Reverend Edward Jenkins of Charleston (S.C.) which contains accounts with James Reid Pringle and lists payments to upholsterer and cabinetmaker John Watson and others; and a receipt book (1823-1850) of Mary Ravenel McCall. Scrapbooks (1855-1925) of Rose P. Ravenel and other Ravenel family members contain clippings, verse, literary and religious passages, quotations, and calling cards. Other items include reports to stockholders of the Stono Phosphate Company and stock certificates.

Manigault family. Manigault family papers, 1824-1897.

Title: Manigault family papers, 1824-1897.

The collection is chiefly plantation records of the Silk Hope (Berkeley District, S.C.) and the Gowrie and East Hermitage plantations (Argyle Island, Ga.). These volumes contain information on slaves (including, in volume 5, a photograph of a runaway slave), rice growing, market conditions, the weather, and other topics. Other items include papers of Charles Manigault, including a will and essays on slavery and other topics and a manuscript autobiography of Gabriel Edward Manigualt, detailing his studies in medical schools in Europe and at the Medical College of the State of South Carolina, and his Confederate army career; and an album, 1861-1868. There are also papers of Louis Manigault, containing letters, bits of a wartime diary, wartime clippings, and other papers related to his service as a Confederate surgeon and to Joseph Jones (1833-1896) under whom he served.

Holograph manuscript with annotations and corrections written by Gabriel Manigault for publication in the Proceedings of the Elliott Society. In the manuscript Manigault notes that an earlier article, published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History, was based on his letter to J.B. Holder. The manuscript describes the capture of a Right whale in Charleston harbor in January 1880, a description of the whale, the steps taken to preserve the specimen for exhibit at the College of Charleston Museum, and descriptions taken from published sources describing similar animals that had been sighted along the American coast and elsewhere beginning in the early 18th century.

Portion (pages 16-28) of a typewritten transcription of a memoir by Charles I. Manigault. He gives his observations about slaves, free persons of color, and the freedmen; describes the treatment of his slaves at Silk Hope Plantation and elsewhere before the Civil War; and writes of the looting and vandalism in Charleston, the Cooper River region, and elsewhere, by Federal soldiers and blacks during and after the war. Much of the narrative deals with his farm, Marshlands, located six miles from Charleston on the Cooper River, his attempts to recover stolen property, and the conduct of the freedmen. He criticizes the Federal officers, whose "principal characteristic...was that of theft," and in particular General Sickles "sent to lord it over South Carolina." He also mentions his cousin General Edward Manigault, his son Gabriel Manigault, his cousin Heyward Manigault (of Adams Run, S.C.), and the fate of some Manigault family portraits.

Included are letters between the Manigaults and the related Heyward and Pringle families, and correspondence (1833-1862) of Charles Izard Manigault with Robert Habersham & Son, rice factors of Savannah, Ga. Other correspondents include Joseph Manigault, Arthur Middleton, Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809), Lewis Morris, Elizabeth Heyward Manigault, Gabriel Edward Manigault, James Coward (overseer of Silk Hope Plantation), and James Haynes (overseer of Gowrie Plantation on the Savannah River). There are also letters (1831-1832) from Petty Vaughn of London (England) regarding his purchase of portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Izard from Mrs. John Singleton Copley. A letterbook (1846-1848) of Charles Izard Manigault in Paris (France) contains copies of letters to Henry W. Conner, Louis Manigault, plantation overseers, and others concerning family, business, and plantation matters. Financial records include accounts of Charles Izard Manigault with Welles & Co. (Paris, France) and Robert Habersham & Son (Savannah, Ga.), and Manigault family household receipts.

Volume entitled "Proceedings: Elliott Society of Natural History" contains handwritten minutes of meetings, printed copies of minutes, broadsides concerning the society and its members, clippings about Society meetings, and post cards from individuals wishing to join the Society. Minutes note contributions to the Society's museum and library collections, papers accepted for publication in the society's proceedings (published 1856-1890), and information about papers delivered or topics discussed at meetings. Prominent members included Francis S. Holmes (the Society's first secretary), Lewis R. Gibbes (president of the Society for 30 years), Rev. John Bachman (also a president of the Society), and Gabriel E. Manigault (curator of the College Museum).

Two plantation journals (1861-1873) for Silk Hope Plantation contains lists of workers, accounts with workers noting the amount of rice harvested, yearly reports on crops of rice and corn, lists of supplies purchased, and lists of clothing for slaves and workers. Account book (1874-1886) of Gabriel E. Manigault and his brother Louis Manigault concerns household expenses for groceries, sundry items, and wages for servants. There are also accounts (1885) of repairs made to Gabriel E. Manigault's house at 6 Gibbes Street in Charleston. Speeches concern subjects such as connoisseurship and painting. School papers include essays, poetry, and a geometry exercise. Other items include a list and catalog8563 family papers. of South Carolina portraits exhibited at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, Ga.; a list of miniatures painted by E.G. Malbone and Charles Fraser; drafts of an advertisement or article about the sale of a portrait by Madame Vigee-LeBrun; a lease agreement between the Carolina Art Association and Eleanor T. Wragg; an essay about Madeira wine and its consumption in South Carolina and Georgia; a petition (1882) to the U.S. Congress concerning a bust of Lafayette; instructions on playing a pedal harp; recipes; and clippings concerning wine and winemaking. Genealogical materials include notes on the Manigault and Heyward families, epitaphs of Horry family members, and a genealogical chart of Heyward and Manigault family connections.
