Papers relating to the career of George Francis Dow as an antiquarian bookseller, genealogist, and historian. Correspondence with William Sumner Appleton, Charles K. Bolton, Worthington Ford, Seth Low, Sidney Perley, and Eben Putnam consists of genealogical and historical inquiries and organizational planning for the Boston Athenaeum, the Essex Institute, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, the Topsfield Historical Society, and the Walpole Society. Papers also relate to Dow's activity in the Massachusetts Republican Party. Political solicitations include several from the Massachusetts Man Suffrage Association which worked against woman suffrage in municipal elections. (Cont) Further correspondence includes letters seeking Dow's professional knowledge; papers relating to his editing work as Secretary of the Essex Institute and as curator/director of the S.P.N.E.A.; and Dow's successful efforts to purchase and restore the Parson Capen House in Topsfield, Mass.

This collection consists of letters from Goodwin to George Francis Dow (1868-1936), an historian and antiquarian of New England. The letters concern various prints which illustrate it. (The results of Goodwin's research were presented in an article published in the Walpole Society Yearbook for 1935.) Most of the letters discuss the prints which were reproduced from the engraving plates made by Paul Revere (1735-1818) and Henry Pelham (1749-1806).

Consists of two folders labelled "Notes on Early Houses" and "Houses and Buildings" that contain handwritten and typed notes related to the construction of buildings in Massachusetts, primarily before 1700. Included are the text of contracts from Essex County court files, rough diagrams, and notes on when houses were first built in particular towns.

Pickman, Dudley Leavitt, 1779-1846. Dudley Leavitt Pickman Papers 1721-1938.

Title: Dudley Leavitt Pickman Papers 1721-1938.

The bulk of the collection reflects the business and personal activities of Dudley Leavitt Pickman (1779-1846), a wealthy businessman and legislator. The collection also contains business and personal papers of other family members. The Business Papers contain correspondence, legal, and financial papers reflecting Dudley's business and domestic concerns. Dudley served as trustee of Simon Forrester's estate along with Nathaniel Bowditch and Leverett Saltonstall. Of special note are the letter of marque for the ship Endeavor (1815), his appointment as Justice of the Peace, and an ammendment to his will. The Personal Papers contain diaries of daily activities (1805-1818). The Relatives' Papers contain correspondence, legal, and financial papers of various Pickman family members. Of special note are the naturalization papers of Benjamin Pickman (1787), the correspondence to Benjamin Pickman's wife, and a journal of Edward M. Pickman's trip to Spain in 1915.

O. Wright ( - ); Carlos Slafter (1825-1907); Frank Warren Hackett (1841-1926); Fanny Whitmore ( - ); George Francis Dow (1868-1936), of the Essex Institute; Sidney Lawton Smith (1845-1919); Charles Eliot Goodspeed (1867-1950); J. A. Remick ( - ); A. T. S. Goodrich ( - ); and A. W. Davis ( - ), as well as the town clerks of Harwich, Orleans, and Barnstable, Mass. Included also is a printed copy of a paper, written by Cunningham, entitled _Christian Remick--An Early Boston Artist_, published by the Club of Odd Volumes in 1904. There is a newspaper clipping from the 13 May 1904 issue of the _Boston Transcript_ about the receipt of a gift of a Remick watercolor by the Massachusetts Historical Society, as well as miscellaneous notes regarding Remick.

Includes correspondence, work for Dow's books, chapters for books of other writers, articles, and speeches for delivery at meetings or over radio. Much is for the SPNEA periodical "Old Time New England."

Collection consists of original letters, photostats of letters, printed facsimiles, and autographed envelopes. The majority of letters were written during the 18th and 19th centuries. Putnam, Rufus, 1738-1824. Papers, 1790-1828.

Title: Papers, 1790-1828.

This collection includes a folder of Putnam's papers, 1790 to 1828, including bank notes, receipts, and an eleven-page letter to Hon. Fisher Ames (1758-1808), dated 9 January 1790, stating reasons why the U.S. government should retain and settle its western lands (a typed copy of this letter is included). The folder also contains undated recommendations (circa 1920) by George Francis Dow (1868-1936) concerning the restoration of the Rufus Putnam house in Rutland, and an inventory of furnishings in the house. The octavo volume contains an address on Putnam written by Rev. Herbert Edwin Lombard (1863-1940) in 1932 and delivered before the Sutton Historical Society.
