This series documents Pierre S. du Pont's activities on the Business Advisory Council and National Labor Relations Board. Correspondence describes P.S. du Pont's attitudes towards the Banking Act of 1935, the Wagner Labor Relations Bill, and the Townsend Old Age pension proposals. These papers show that during the early days of the New Deal, Pierre S. du Pont maintained a close relationship with NIRA administrator Hugh Johnson and he hoped that FDR's recovery program would be based on a system of "industrial cooperation" that would recognize the predominant role that big business was playing in American economic life. The papers document Pierre S. du Pont's support for the Gerard Swope plan for "industrial self government".

The collection consists of records created while Karl Taylor Compton (president 1930-1948) and James Rhyne Killian (president 1948-1959) served in the position of president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It contains correspondence, reports, memoranda, and committee materials about the activities of the presidents and their staff, the definition and evolution of policies, and the administration of the Institute. Records document Compton's early efforts to strengthen the administrative structure of the Institute, to encourage research, and to develop the science curriculum. Defense research and other contributions in the years of World War II, as well as MIT's role and influence in policy and research developments in the postwar years is also well documented.

The John J. Raskob Papers document Raskob's business and political careers as well as his personal life. The papers document significant aspects of the histories of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company and the General Motors Corporation during the first half of the twentieth century. Raskob played a crucial role in the creation of these two industrial giants. His papers trace the transformation of these companies into modern decentralized corporations and the relationship between business strategy and corporate structure. The Raskob Papers also describe the relationship between Du Pont and G.M. in the years between 1915 and 1950.

Title: Correspondence, 1907-1945.

The correspondence of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education consists largely of letters between Dugald Jackson, Gerard Swope, and Karl Compton documenting their efforts to shape the curriculum at major engineering schools. The society was particularly interested in encouraging engineering schools to teach courses which focused on the business and economic aspects of engineering. Jackson and Compton appear to have been concerned with separating the engineering schools from the liberal arts colleges which they viewed as being overly concerned with abstractions and lacking constructive approaches to industrial problems. The correspondence also documents the society's efforts to develop standards for professional ethics, raise funds for scholarships and fellowships for needy students, and develop library collections. The files contain a good deal of information about the Engineering department at M.I.T.--its structure, curriculum, funding sources, and relationships with industry.
