Correspondence of Mary Grant, daughter of British author Anne MacVicar Grant, begins shortly after the Lowell family stayed with the Grants in Scotland in 1810. Leaving their children with Anne and Mary Grant for boarding and schooling, Francis C. Lowell, Hannah Lowell, and her sister Harriet Jackson travelled in France and England until 1812. Anne and Mary corresponded with the Lowells, reporting on Susan's and John's progress. Later letters of Harriet Jackson and Mary Grant concern mutual friends and social, religious, and literary happenings in Britain and the U.S. Some figures discussed include Joanna Baillie, Thomas H. Gallaudet, Rev. Francis Parkman, and George Ticknor.

Personal and family papers of merchant John Lowell (1799-1836) and his wife Georgina M.A. Lowell contain correspondence between the couple during their courtship and 1825 marriage until Georgina's death in 1830. Topics discussed include family matters, Lowell's descriptions of his trips to Maine and elsewhere in the Northeast (1825), his opinions of the proposed Tariff of Abominations in 1828, his conversations with William E. Channing during his journey to Richmond, Va., to attend the Constitutional Convention in that state (1829), and the subsequent speeches on the topic of freeholder suffrage. Also, correspondence between Georgina Lowell and Anna C. Lowell, many in French; letters between the couple and John's brother Edward J. Lowell regarding business, book collecting, and the latter's travels in Europe; and letters of Hannah J. Lowell and Ann Tracy of Newburyport, Mass. (Cont.) The papers also contain some verses and a romantic story written by Georgina Lowell, and an unidentified woman's diary.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Title: Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Papers of financier and merchant Francis Cabot Lowell II (1803-1874). Treasurer of the Amoskeag (Manchester, N.H.) and Merrimac Manufacturing Companies (Lowell, Mass.) and actuary of the Mass. General Hospital Life Insurance Co. (Boston). The papers span the years 1788-1966 and consist of manuscripts, diaries, journals, notebooks and account books. Included is considerable material on Lowell family finances, the Glendon Iron Co., and the Phoenix Glass Works. Family members represented in the correspondence include: Anna C., George G., Edward J., John III, John IV, John A., Mary G., and Georgina Lowell. (cont) Other correspondents and persons discussed in the collection include: Robert W. Barnwell, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edward Everett, Samuel P. Gardner, Horace Gray, Francis Lowell Hills, Charles W. Upham, Josiah Quincy, Daniel Webster and Robert C. Winthop. The collection also contains diaries of Lowell's wife, Mary Gardner, his daughter Georgina, and his maid, Lorenza Stevens Berbineau. There are John H. Ladd and Ladd family papers, diaries of William Ladd Ropes, and letters of William Ladd.

A letter, 1837 May 4, to Mrs. Beecroft, discusses the death of a daughter-in-law, severity of the past winter, politics, religion, the improvement in society due to the influence of women and the marriages and deaths of friends. She mentions Lord John Campbell, John Lowell, Elizabeth Carter, trouble in Spain, the Edinburgh Review, the Lowell Institute, Hannah More's "Life and letters," and Catherine Sinclair's "Modern accomplishments." A letter, 1826 March 23, to Felicia Dorothea Hemans, praises Hemans on her book of poetry, "Forest Sanctuary," sent by the author, and describes a poem she herself began working on fifty years ago. She also sends condolences on a death in the family, and mentions various people. A letter, 1829 February 27, from Grant to Andrews Norton, discusses a recent visit of Norton to Scotland, comments on the poet, Felicia Dorothea Hemans, and mentions "Notions of the Americans," "Life of Lord Collingwood," "Journal and Letters of Bishop Heber," and the criticism of Lockhart's "Life of Burns" in the Edinburgh Review by Thomas Carlyle. Also laments trials of old age, sends greetings to American friends. A letter of introduction to Thomas Carlyle is present. There are also two invitations; a note regarding hunting; and a letter, 1822 July 1, describing visits and various family matters. Families discussed include the Fletchers and the Booths.
