The company, a cotton manufacturer in Lowell, Mass., was incorporated in 1828 by members of the Proprietors of Locks and Canals. William and Nathan Appleton, John Lowell, Jr., William Sturgis and Thomas Perkins served as officers. The mill produced sheetings, shirtings and drillings. Operations ceased at the Lowell site in the early 1920's. J.P. Stevens & Co. purchased the South Carolina division in 1925.
