31 manuscript volumes and ca. 1400 manuscripts of the Nourse family of Weston, Herfordshire, England; Berkeley Co., W. Va.; Washington, D.C.; and Weston, Fauquier Co., Va.; and of related Bull and Morris families. The collection includes: letters, account books, commonplace books, day books, notebooks, ledgers, maps, music, newspaper clippings, sermons, recipe book, journals, and other family records. Diary, 1846, 1850-1851, of James Burn Nourse describes an overland journey west, voyage around Cape Horn on the U.S. sloop of war "Preble", and his experiences in the California gold rush. Ledgers, 1844-1848, record operations of a foundry, possibly the West Point Foundry, West Point, N.Y. Ledgers of Joseph Nourse and letters to his wife, Maria Bull Nourse and his son, Charles Josephus Nourse chiefly relate to American finance during the Revolutionary and Confederation periods, his work as Register of the Treasury, campaigns in the War of 1812, the administration of the U.S. Army, 1819-1829, the effect of Jackson's spoils system; and to the Washington political and social scene and include mentions of James and Dolley Madison. Letters of Charles Josephus Nourse to his wife, Rebecca Morris Nourse and others, describe life in London where he had been sent by Madison, the War of 1812, military actions, and Indian removals. Letters from Anthony Morris to his children describe his life as an unofficial diplomat in Spanish society, his travels in Spain and personal matters. In addition the papers contain correspondence of other family members. Individual items of interest include a 1780 broadside regarding General Lafayette's orders regarding the proposed invasion of Canada, a note regarding entertainment for General Lafayette, and James Barbour's map of Washington, D.C.; a dinner invitation from George Washington; two dinner invitations from James Madison; three pieces of colonial Maryland currency, 1775-1776. Correspondents include Nicholas Biddle, John C. Calhoun, Sir Augustus John Foster, Sam Houston, Joel Poinsett, Richard Rush, and Winfield Scott.

Sundry autobiographical and daily notes that Sterling jotted (on the back of muster rolls and returns), in August and September 1847, whiling away time onboard of the Preble. Three manuscripts (HM 66241, HM 66244, and HM 66245) describe the minutia of the life onboard of the Preble (including an account of a duel). The remaining two are devoted to the recollections of the author's childhood, chiefly the time he spent at his uncle's plantation in Sterlington, his school years at Lafayette Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and his travels through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Kentucky. One of the autobiographical manuscripts (HM 66243) is a collection of anecdotes and reminiscences, including a story of two Irishmen whom his uncle had hired to dig a ditch; a short story titled "The First Night of Marriage, or the Happy Return: A Domestic Narrative," and "Early recollections" about his life in Louisiana, (including accounts of the plantations slaves), and the school. The second miscellany (HM 66242) contains Sterling's attempts at humorous prose, presumably autobiographical: short stories "A Ghostly Night," "That Boy Jo and the Art of Catfiring [sic]: Sportsmanlike Habit," two Irish anecdotes "Keeping the Pledge" and "It's all the Priest's Fault," and a letter to "Dear Samuel" dated "Sept. 14, 1847" and subtitled "Melancholy recollections."

Autographed letter signed from USS Preble, Mississippi River, March 4, 1862 to Joshua Blake, Boston, MA describing the capture of the Confederate steamer Magnolia with 1100 bales of cotton on board. It was captured by the Union ships Brooklyn, South Carolina and Merridita in the Mississippi River at the northeast pass, as it ran the blockade. Three other Confederate steamers successfully made their way through the blockade, avoiding capture.

The Civil War account (4 p.) includes the capture of Fort Henry, being taken prisoner and released, discharge date, and his arrival at the East Gulf Squadron. Also includes some biographical information added to the account after his death in 1887. The Mexican War account (2 p.) has details of a naval action while aboard the Sloop of War, Preble, and the capture of two ships, the General Merrimon and the Marcus D. Havana. Includes typescript transcription of both accounts.
