Also, include papers of Grey Skipwith (1839-1895), including correspondence, 1873-1893 (chiefly concerning debts); accounts, 1871-1877, concerning bonds and property taxes; checks, 1878-1890, drawn on the Bank of Commerce and the First National Bank, Richmond, Va.; bonds, 1872-1890; agreements, 1864-1865, concerning "Upper Quarter Island," part of the "Prestwould" estate, Mecklenburg County; deeds, 1873-1874, for land in Mecklenburg County; and a deed of release, 1883, for land in Richmond, Va. The papers contain transcripts of a 1794 contract between Peyton Skipwith and Jacob Shelor for the building of the house; a letter, 1795 August 27, from Jean Skipwith to James Maury enclosing an invoice for sundries to be used in the finishing; directions and measurements, 1794, for the house; and bills for labor and materials. The collection also contains a contract, 1785, between Skipwith and Shelor for the building of chimneys; and a contract between Skipwith and James Hooper in 1775 for the erection of grain mills; as well as an inventory, 1791, for furniture at Elm Hill.
