Papers of the Fayerweather and Brown families of Massachusetts, 1718-1976. Fayerweather family papers, 1718-1976, include a typescript of a diary by Thomas Fayerweather (b. 1661) kept during travels and land negotiations with Sagamore Indians in Maine, 1720. Thomas Fayerweather (1724-1804) papers contain correspondence with Edward Shippen, David van Horne, Samuel Thomas Smith, and Theophilus Boswell, business papers, and a memory book, 1743-1799, documenting his activities as a merchant in Boston. George Thomas Fayerweather papers include correspondence, muster rolls, quartermaster forms, ordnance forms, and other military papers, 1862-1876, from his tenure in the army during the Civil War, especially his term as a captain in the 4th Mass. Heavy Artillery Regiment. The papers also include Eleanor Appleton Fayerweather's correspondence from travels in England, France, Germany, and Italy, lecture notes, clippings, scrapbook, and sketchbook, 1928-1976, as well as an unidentified diary from Nov. 1853. Brown family papers, 1831-1873, include Samuel Harrison Brown's correspondence, autograph book, and papers relating to the Boston Light Infantry, 1831-1873, Ellen Elizabeth Brown Fayerweather's correspondence, including letters from cousin James Peck of the 6th Mass. Volunteer Infantry Regiment, library catalog, and diary, 1857-1864, and an autograph book by Harriet Augusta Brown, 1864-1868. The collection also includes biographical and genealogical materials for the Fayerweather, Brown, Hinchcliffe, and Wheelock families.
