This collection of papers of William L. Marcy papers primarily relates to Marcy's role as receiver of the City Bank of Buffalo, when that bank failed in 1840. Marcy was associated with George W. Newell, who also acted as receiver. Included in the collection are records relating to the receivership and other unrelated records which include records on the Erie Canal, transcriptions of letters by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, several items relating to slavery and abolition, and records relating to United States foreign relations. A majority of the records of this collection relate to Marcy and Newell's receivership of the City Bank of Buffalo. Included in these records are court records relating to claims against and by the bank, correspondence, court orders, inventories of bank property and other assets, records relating to Marcy's suit against the East Boston Lumber Company, as receiver of the bank, and other legal documents relating to the bank's failure. Correspondents in the collection include John Jacob Astor, John Delafield, Lewis Eaton, John B. Macy, William Rice, and Stephen White.
