Title:
[Commonplace book], [1697-1728].
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of several hundred primarily religious or lighthearted entries, including poetry, recipes, sermons, epitaphs, extracts, and a treatise on the months and phases of the moon. The manuscript contains verses copied from early 17th-century books, including Remains concerning Britain by William Camden and Josuah Sylvester's translation of Du Bartas's Divine weeks & works, as well as more contemporary works, such as The true-Bred Englishman and The mock-mourners, by Daniel Defoe. Several of the religious poems are anti-Catholic, while others focus on the subjects of women and love. Other entries include extracts from sermons of Hugh Latimer and colloquies of Erasmus; recipes, including some from Helmes Trismegistus; extracts from the Journal of Nathaniel Mist; and a lengthy treatise on the months, the phases of the moon, and astrological signs entitled The shepherd's kalendar, which is accompanied by illustrations of astrological signs; a shepherd reaching for the stars;and a diagram with moveable parts, held in place by a pin. In addition to the illustrations accompanying the astrological treatise, the manuscript contains a drawing of the Virgin Mary titled "Taken oute of T. V. Monk of the holy Order of St. Benedict It shews their absurdity."

Lawson, John. [Diary], 1766 May 6-Jul 1.
Title:
[Diary], 1766 May 6-Jul 1.
Manuscript journal kept by Lawson during a journey from Lancaster through Derby and Northamptonshire to London, with a return trip via Bristol, Glocester, Shrewsbury and Chester. Lawson describes travel and roads, meals, inns, churches and market halls, and the economic conditions of the towns and villages through which he passes. Almost half of the text is devoted to the month Lawson spent in London. Subjects include lodgings, Lawson's frequent attendance at several Quaker meetings, and appointments with relatives and acquaintances. He also records his almost-daily sightseeing, describing Guildhall, Parliament House, the Royal Exchange, St. Paul's, Bedlam, the Tower of London, Lloyd's coffeehouse, and Finchley Common. The entries on a night visit to Vauxhall Gardens, a tour of Greenwich Hospital, and a royal military review at Wimbledon on June 28th are particularly detailed. Other topics include a display of a wooden model of the city of Paris; exotic animals and plants, including a zebra and an elephant, which "can lie down, contrary to rumor;" and his purchase of "A Tour thro' Britain which consists of 4 volumes."

Title:
Donald Oenslager collection of Edward Gordon Craig 1898-1967
The Donald Oenslager Collection of Edward Gordon Craig is an artificial collection containing correspondence and artwork created by the noted theatrical designer and graphic artist, Edward Gordon Craig. Although born and raised in England, Craig moved to the continent in 1904 where he continued to work; the impact of his radical innovations in stage design were international in scope. Craig’s colleague, Donald Oenslager, an American stage designer and longtime faculty member of the Yale School of Drama, whose own work had been profoundly influenced by Craig, amassed the selection of letters and prints that form this collection.

Title:
Donald Hyde and Mary Hyde Eccles autograph collection, 1505-1957 (inclusive), 1702-1854 (bulk).
The Hyde autograph file was collected by Donald Frizell Hyde (1909-1966) and Mary Hyde, later Viscountess Eccles (1912-2003) from 1941 to 2002. Many of the items relate in some way to Samuel Johnson and his extended circle. The collection includes significant letters from Joseph Addison, Sir Joseph Banks, Jeremy Bentham, William Cowper, Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Edwards, Thomas Hobbes, T.E. Lawrence, John Locke, John Stuart Mill, Alexander Pope, Sir Walter Scott, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Horace Walpole. Another highlight is a letter of introduction written by Gilbert Walmsley for Samuel Johnson and David Garrick on their first journey to London. Many of the items relate to bookselling and publishing during the late eighteenth century.

Title:
Papers of John Dos Passos [manuscript], 1896-1970.
The collection consists chiefly of correspondence with publishers, lecture organizer Harold R. Peat, inc., and academics. Correspondence, 1953-1955, with the Peat agency discusses itineraries, monetary arrangements, criticism, advice, lecture format and stress. Some contracts, itinaries and instruction sheets are included. Correspondence with agents and publishers traces the publication history of his books. Very brief, routine letters from academics generally request permission to reprint selections in anthologies and college texts. Of interest in the correspondence are a 1952 letter resigning from the American Civil Liberties Union and three letters re potential libel over the character "Elsa" in "Great Days." The collection also contains a Columbia University Law School Class Book, 1896, with a biographical note and photograph of his half brother James Madison; royalty statements; clippings; obituaries; a memoranda notebook; miscellaneous printed material and two articles by Dos Passos "The Truth About Visual Training," "Two Eighteenth-Century Careers"and "Thomas Jefferson Looks At the Modern World."
