Primarily contains photographs of military aircraft, including some showing the famous B-36 Peacemaker and B-58 Hustler bombers. The most well documented sections, however, are of experimental military designs, the Static Test Center, which tests metal fatigue, and the experimental "Solar Furnace" (solar-powered laser).

Title: Thomas G. Lanphier papers, before 1987.

The collection contains a single manuscript, "Esprit de Corps", written by Lanphier at the end of his career. It gives a family history of involvement in military aviation that includes his father's World War I experiences and his own World War II experiences in the Pacific Theater, particularly the event when Lanphier shot down Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. Also highlighted is Lanphier's civilian career with Convair as a missile-age executive and advocate for advanced missile defense systems against the Soviet Union in the 1950s and early 1960s.

In the first part of the interview, Stein discusses his early career and the formation of the University of Minnesota's computing facilities. After learning basic digital and analog operation during World War II, he obtained a doctorate in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles. While teaching numerical analysis at UCLA, he also worked on missile simulation at Convair, Inc., in San Diego. After becoming familiar with the ERA 1103 computer Convair purchased from Engineering Research Associates (ERA), Stein made frequent visits to ERA headquarters in Minnesota.
