Philip Bliss, English antiquarian and book collector. Bliss wrote notes and the appendix to the 1811 edition of John Earle's 17th century work on characters, Micro-cosmographie.
Biographical Note
Philip Bliss, Oxford antiquary, was one of the first collectors to recognize the historical and cultural importance of the medieval manuscript fragments. Most of the fragments came from the best known books of the Middle Ages; they survived intact in England until ca. 1520-70 at which time, particularly in Oxford and Cambridge, they were taken to pieces for use by binders as pastedowns, wrappers, fly leaves, and reinforcing strips.

Title:
Philip Bliss manuscript material : 1 items, ca. 1811
· Holograph scrap-book, "Dr. Bliss's collection of characters" : (MISC 0678), ca. 30 leaves made up of pasted-in notes, and prefaced by a number of miscellaneous papers, fragments of printed material, and one letter from an unidentified correspondent. Bound in tan boards, with a spine title lettered in pen. The work appears to be a bibliography of 17th century works on "characters," probably relating to Bliss's 1811 edition of John Earle's Micro-cosmographie. Shelved under "Bliss" with bound manuscript volumes.
