Title:
Webb-Prentis family papers, 1735-1942.
Papers of the Webb-Prentis families and related families, the Dardens, Allens, and Riddicks, all of Suffolk, Nansemond Co., and Williamsburg, Va. The papers consist of personal, financial, business, and professional papers, miscellaneous manuscripts, memorabilia, ledgers, Bible records with electrostatic copies, and currency. Business and financial papers include colonial tax recipts, bills of exchange, bonds, bills of lading, journals and ledgers. A major segment consists of the case papers of Robert Riddick Prentis, a Suffolk, Va., lawyer. The papers of Joseph Prentis Webb, a Suffolk, Va., drug and hardware company owner, contain financial and legal papers from his company and records of his civic activities. Prominent among them are papers regarding the Suffolk Street Railway Company, a controversy with two hardware companies over ill-fitting school windows and papers as treasurer of St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, Suffolk. Portions of his Civil War diary containing descriptions of the retreat from Gettysburg and an 1864 convalescence are included. The collection also contains business and legal papers, 1867-1905, of Darden and Eley, a Suffolk dry goods and hardware firm. Many concern the rebuilding and expansion of the store following the Suffolk fire of 1885 and the settlement of Robert Eley's estate. Other items of interest include the European travel diary, 1873, of the Rev. James Murray and his pastoral notebooks, 1871-1873; Bible records of the famlies; court memoranda books, 1786-1788 for York County, and Elizabeth City, and for the Nansemond Superior Court, 1815, 1824-1838; and a list of interesting events kept by Robert H. Webb, which includes Nat Turner's rebellion. The various ledgers and account books from 18th century Williamsburg, most of which were kept by Prentis family members, mention many prominent colonial Virginians including Carter Braxton, Christiana Campbell, Josiah Chewning, Richard Corbin, Philip Ludwell, Thomas Nelson, Thomas Presley, Alexander Purdie, John Randolph, John Tyler, and Henry Wetherburne.
