Title: Asa Gray papers

The distinction between the two groups of papers reflects both their provenance and the way the materials have been maintained by the Gray Herbarium over the years. "Manuscript case" materials comprise mostly Gray's writings, and originally were probably a part of the Herbarium's office files. "Green box" materials are largely personal in nature, including correspondence of Jane Loring Gray and were assembled and donated to the Herbarium by her. Related material from other donors, such as Walter Deane, have also been included in this collection. The manuscript collection contains drafts of works both published and unpublished which Gray wrote for scientific and general audiences; reviews by Gray; notes for Harvard, Lowell Institute and various club lectures; account books, 1838-1891, for personal accounts and accounts with the Herbarium; and certificates, degrees and awards. "Green box" materials contain biobraphical information such as an autobiographical manuscript, travel journals, 1838-1839, other individuals' reminiscences of Gray and clippings, correspondence with family members, colleagues and scientific societies and serveral notebooks containing descriptions of specimens in various herbaria, mostly in Europe. Correspondence documents the lifestyle of upperclass Bostonians, and provides insights into faculty activities at Harvard as well as describing certain events such as the Wilkes Expedition. The collection also contains Jane Gray's letters to her family while in Europe, her diaries, and materials pertaining to the book, Letters of Asa Gray, which she edited. In addition, the collection includes ten daguerreotype portraits of botanists.

Consists of drawings of new species of Japanese plants prepared by Isaac Sprague; they are black and white and most are 11"x14.5". Eight drawings illustrate species described in Gray's account of Perry expedition plants; 18 illustrate species described in Gray's account of Japanese plants of the North Pacific expedition; and 28 drawings are unidentified.

Title: Records of the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842 (inclusive).

Contains manuscripts and drawings, probably gathered by Asa Gray in producing the expedition's first report. Includes lists of plants collected on the expedition (created by several individuals); letters by Francis Boott and Brackenridge containing notes on Carices and Unciniae and catalog of phanogamous plants; notes by Gray on plants of Hawaii and his manuscript for the unpublished portion of the botanical report. Also colored drawings, possibly field sketches, mostly by Alfred T. Agate and some by Joseph Drayton; and black and white drawings by Agate, W.R. Hutton, Drayton and Isaac Sprague.

Sprague, Isaac, 1811-1895. Diary, 1843.

Title: Diary, 1843.

Sprague, born in Hingham, Mass., learned something of drawing as apprentice to his uncle, Blossom Sprague, a carriage painter, though he was largely self-taught. By 1839 he was spending much of his time drawing and painting birds; some of these watercolors, produced before 1843, are owned by the Boston Athenaeum. In 1843, Sprague was engaged by John James Audubon as an artist, to accompany the naturalist on an expedition up the Missouri River. Sprague travelled as far as Fort Union, while Audubon went on to the Yellowstone. In his diary, Sprague notes the terrain and the flora and fauna of the frontier; evocative descriptions of scenery, encounters with Indians along the route, hunting and specimen gathering. He includes an account of Fort Union, and of the Americans living there. This volume is but one in a series of diaries spanning the years 1839 to 1875, but the only one owned by the Athenaeum.

These papers consist of correspondence concerning temperature, wind, and weather reports of the Hudson Bay region, 1848; resolutions of condolence to Coffin's son, Seldon J. Coffin, from students and alumni of Lafayette College after Coffin's death, 1873; newspaper articles; an illustration of James H. Coffin; and the original manuscript of Winds of the Northern Hemisphere. Additional correspondence of James Henry Coffin exists elsewhere in the Smithsonian Institution Archives, especially in the Joseph Henry Collection, Record Unit 7001, and Meteorological Project Records, Record Unit 60.
