Collection consists primarily of White's letterpress books and correspondence, with some related bills, receipts, and other ephemera, 1887-1906, relating to his professional and personal matters. Correspondence, 1907, relates to his estate. Correspondents of note include William A. Boring, Richard Morris Hunt, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Louis C. Tiffany, John La Farge, Charles McKim, Frederick Law Olmsted, Whitney Warren, Stefano Bardini, Bessie White, William Merritt Chase, William Robert Ware, Kenyon Cox, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Percy Baker, Cass Gilbert, Childe Hassam, John Singer Sargent, John Wanamaker, Carrère & Hastings, Thomas Dewing, James McNeill Whistler, Lawrence White, Richard White, and other architects, artists, contractors, suppliers, clients, friends, and family members. One letter book contains letters, 1922, by White's son Lawrence Grant White. Also included are White's architectural drawings for houses he built for himself at St. James, Long Island, 1892-1904, and 121 East 21st Street, New York, undated; miscellaneous drawings; and a few architectural drawings by Lawrence Grant White, and drafts of his translation of Dante's DIVINE COMEDY.

Newton's patented cast iron wing gudgeons for use in Douglass' mill; and slave bills of sale, 1819-1831. Military documents include commission, 1828, for John White; Revolutionary war claims, 1833-1843, for George Shearman of Greene County, Va., and William Wayt; and claims, 1855, regarding John Douglass' service in the War of 1812. Also include wills: John Douglass, Orange County, Va., 1828, including clause permitting female slave to chose whether or not to be free, with removal funds provided if necessary; May Burton, Orange County, Va., 1828; Willis White, Sr., 1830; and Richard White, 1841 (1849 probate). Miscellaneous legal documents include copies of summonses, 1844-1846, for Greene County, Va., debt suits; and guardianship appointment, 1852, for Martha Sherman, Monroe County, Mo. Correspondence includes family news and social news from family members in Kentucky and Missouri; and letters, 1861-1865, of Captain John M. Douglass, 155th Regiment, 1st District, 1st Company, Greene County, Va., to his wife Sallie and daughter Bettie, concerning the management of the plantation in his absence and frequent references to the slaves. Also includes letter, 1867, from C.V. Hill, a freedwoman working in Baltimore, and letter, 1870, from Emily, a freedwoman working at the Exchange Hotel in Harrisonburg. A letter from Margaret Rogers, relates the burning of the Kingston Mills in Atlanta, Ga. Also include accounts, 1883-1893, for the Ruckersville Post Office (Va.) with Internal Revenue accounts recording alcohol storage and sales taxes; plantation accounts, 1837-1877, some from Mountain View, with notations for corn, flour, household items; freedmen's agreements and sharecropping agreements.

Title: Richard White collection

The Richard White Collection, which covers the period 1905 to 1920, includes correspondence between the Director of the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station, H. J. Patterson, and the Superintendent of the Ridgely Sub-station, Charles Opperman. The two men discuss administrative details concerning the setup of the farm as an experiment sub-station, including questions about how expenses will be handled and what repairs should be made to the existing structures. The correspondence also contains descriptions of the experimental work taking place on the farm as well as plans for future work. In addition, the series contains an annual report from 1917 and two detailed inventories of items on the Ridgely property in 1917 and 1920. Maps show the boundaries of the farm and its field divisions. These materials date from 1914 to 1920. The collection also contains academic reports of Herbert James White, a student of the Maryland Agricultural College from 1905 until 1911.

Title: The Ivan H. Slater Collection of Alexandre Dumas, 1918-1968.

Comprises holograph manuscripts and notebooks containing manuscript translations of Dumas works, typescripts, bound volumes containing works by and about Dumas, bibliographies, correspondence, photographs, and a scrapbook, ranging in date from 1918 to 1968, representing a lifetime of work by Ivan H. Slater (1900-1968), who began translating works by Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) at the age of 18. The collection contains two holograph items by Dumas--a note and a fragment of Neron. Remaining materials are handwritten or typed translations of most of Dumas' works or materials about him, including extensive bibliographies. Slater's fellow Dumas collector, F.W. Reed, bequeathed his Dumas materials to Slater in 1953, which, in addition to some of his own plays, novels, and other works, are part of this collection.
