The Henry Clinton papers contain the correspondence, records, and maps of Henry Clinton, who served under Thomas Gage and William Howe between 1775 and 1778, and was commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America from 1778 to 1782. The collection provides substantial information related to Orde's bitter disputes with Admiral of the Fleet John Jervis, Lord St. Vincent; his rivalry with Horatio Nelson; and his professional frustration with the workings of the Admiralty Board and its bureaucracy. The collection also contains information on Orde's tenure as governor of Dominica and his suppression of mutinies at Plymouth and on board the Princess Royal. In addition to Lord St. Vincent and Horatio Nelson, correspondents include Baron Gambier, Sir John Duckworth, Sir Evan Nepean, Viscount Melville, and other contemporary naval and political figures.

Manuscript of a report by Admiral Jervis defending his conduct and that of Sir Charles Grey during the West India Expedition of 1793-94. After a review of orders and actions, he concludes that "no two Officers in His Majesty's Service, would have succeeded in the expedition against Martinique, Saint Lucia, and Guadeloupe, except Sir Charles Grey and myself." With his cover letter to Evan Nepean, secretary of the Admiralty, dated from "Victory off Toulon. 10th October 1796."

Included are eighteen manuscript maps, many executed in watercolors, of military actions in Virginia; printed maps like those that also appear in Simcoe's book, A Journal of the Operation of the Queen's Rangers, (Exeter, 1787); diagram of the principal streets and buildings of Williamsburg, Va; a watercolor view of Yorktown, Va., during the siege; copies of letters regarding the book and political and military affairs; reminiscences and memorabilia on Simcoe and his father; and two watercolors of soldiers of the Queen's Rangers. The manuscript maps and drawings were probably made by a soldier under Simcoe's command.

Letterbooks containing letters (most in French) to de Curt and a few letters refering to him. Vol. 1 contains many letters from Charles Jenkinson, Lord Hawkesbury (later first Earl of Liverpool) discussing the French West Indies in his capacity as Minister for Navy and Commerce. Hawkesbury referred in particular to the 1794 capture of the West Indies by Sir Charles Grey and Sir John Jervis, also mentioning de Curt's plan to recover Guadaloupe and the circulation of counterfeit mony in Martinique. A few references were made to the French Revolution. Other correspondents include Emily Mary, the Marchioness of Salisbury, and Henry Dundas, both of whom wrote concerning current events and personal affairs.
