Title: UE local and district files of Presidential Assistant Les Finnegan, 1938-1956.

As Carey's Presidential Assistant Finnegan maintained the latter's office correspondence and reference files pertaining to UE districts and locals. These files span the last year of Carey's tenure as UE President (1941), the formation of IUE (1949), and the disaffiliation movement within UE locals and districts during the 1950s. The bulk of the series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence, telegrams, reports, memoranda, minutes of district and local union meetings, statistical data on membership figures, resolutions, statements, and press clippings received from UE district and local officers within the pro-CIO camp. Major topics include: allegations of communist domination at the district and local levels; protests registered by pro-CIO locals against unwarranted actions (suspension of officers, seizure of assets, revocation of charters) taken by the UE leadership against right-wing locals; the raiding of UE locals desiring disaffiliation with the UE; and local petitions and resolutions of support for Carey, Philip Murray, and national CIO policies. There are scant references to local strikes, collective bargaining, and political action activities.

J. B. Matthews (1894-1966) was a Methodist missionary, college professor, author, lecturer, and prominent conservative spokesman. Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, statements, speeches, reprints, clippings, broadsides, newsletters, press releases, petitions, and other printed material, chiefly 1930-1969. The principal focus of the collection relates to the work and research of Matthews and his associates in the area of anti-communism, particularly in connection with Matthews' role as Director of Research for the Special Committee on Un-American Activities of the U.S. House of Representatives (1938-1945), Executive Director of the Permanent Subcommittee on Government Operations of the U.S. Senate (1953), and a consultant for John A. Clements Associates. Many of the organizations, newspapers, periodicals, and persons represented in the collection have various leftist, socialist, communist, radical, or pacifist (especially anti-Vietnam War) connections.Individuals represented in the files include Ralph Abernathy, Bella Abzug, Roy Cohn, John Foster Dulles, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Michael Harrington, Alger Hiss, J. Edgar Hoover, Jesse Jackson, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Coretta Scott King, Joseph Lash, Joseph McCarthy, Carl McIntire, Benjamin Mandel, Richard Nixon, Aristotle Onassis, Lee Harvey Oswald, Linus Pauling, Drew Pearson, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Louis Untermeyer.

The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.

Title: Fonds d'archives du collège des Irlandais de Paris

On peut être surpris de trouver des actes médiévaux dans le fonds d'un établissement fondé au XVIe siècle. En fait, il s'agit des actes et titres de propriétés sur parchemins concernant le collège des Lombards, qui ont été transmis à la communauté irlandaise lorsque celle-ci s'est établie dans les bâtiments de la rue des Carmes. Le volume le plus important est constitué par les archives du collège avec, outre les documents concernant le Collège des Lombards, ceux du Collège des Irlandais et des bâtiments situés dans et autour de la capitale et appartenant à la communauté Irlandaise, avec une partie particulièrement fournie sur la maison de campagne d'Arcueil (Val-de-Marne), ainsi que des dossiers sur des membres de l'administration du collège. Le fonds dispose également d'une partie sur les fondations des bourses dont étaient dotés les élèves irlandais boursiers venus étudier à Paris. Le Collège des Irlandais de Paris devait probablement jouer le rôle de « maison-mère » par rapport aux autres établissements fondés en France, ce qui peut expliquer pourquoi le fonds possède des liasses concernant les établissements situés à Bordeaux, Douai, Nantes, Rouen et Poitiers. De plus, la fusion opérée au début du XIXe siècle pour l'administration des établissements irlandais, écossais et anglais nous permet de disposer de quelques informations sur ces établissements. Le Collège des Irlandais ayant été principalement un lieu de formation de prêtres, l'on retrouve au sein du fonds un ensemble de documents sur l'Eglise et le monde religieux, avec des lettres d'ordinations et de missions et de la correspondance officielle avec de hauts-membres du clergé. On trouve aussi dans ces Archives un ensemble constitué d'ouvrages, de revues, d'articles et de coupures de presses, de brochures et de prospectus ainsi que de photographies. La présence d'Archives privées, notamment celles d'Antonio de Arauz y Bexaxano en langue espagnole, est à signaler. On note également la présence d'objets (médailles, clefs, boîtes, sacs en tissus avec jetons, encriers, cadres…). Au total, ce sont plus de 19 000 pièces qui sont conservées dans ces Archives.
