U.S. senator from Pennsylvania.
American soldier and politician.
Republican Senator Matthew Stanley Quay was born on September 30, 1833 in Dillsburg, York County, Pennsylvania, the son of Anderson B. Quay, a Presbyterian preacher. M. S. Quay was educated at Beaver and Indiana academies and graduated from Jefferson College in 1850. He subsequently studied law in Pittsburgh with the Penny and Sterrett law firm; James P. Sterrett later became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. In 1855, 1856 and 1859, Quay was the prothonotary of Beaver County. He resigned in 1861 to serve in the Civil War and rose to the rank of Colonel, receiving a Congressional Medal of Honor. In 1864, Quay became a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and served as Secretary and Chairman of the Republican State Committee; he later went on to become Chairman of the National Republican Committee. M. S. Quay was elected as Pennsylvania State Treasurer in 1885 and U.S. Senator (Republican) in 1887. In 1893, Senator Quay insisted on blocking passage of the Wilson bill until it was amended to protect (Pennsylvania) manufacturing interests. He served as Senator until his death in 1904. M. S. Quay coined the phrase, "It is all over but the shouting."

Title:
The German allied troops in the North American war of independence, and related materials, ca. 1767-1893.
Extra-illustrated edition of J. G. Rosengarten's The German allied troops in the North American war of independence, 1776-1783 (Albany, NY: Joel Munsell's Sons, 1893), a translation and abridgement of Max von Eelking's 2-volume work: Die deutschen Hülfstruppen im nordamerikanischen Befreiungskriege, 1776 bis 1783 (Hannover: Helwing, 1863); Rosengarten's work is based on both volumes of the original, but the title page erroneously states: Vol. I. The volume contains a total of 18 original documents dated 1767 to 1893; 74 portraits of 57 different subjects, including one of Rosengarten; 7 maps; and 25 other illustrations, including 2 in color (leaves following p. 162, 254). The original documents include: 15 letters or memoranda; a marriage certificate for John Michael (?) and Elisabeth Grauel on 2 April 1767, signed by Michael Schlatter and with a red wax seal showing his coat of arms (leaf following p. 240); a ledger sheet for Pulaski's Legion in Charleston, dated 8 August 1779, signed by Charles-Frédéric Bedaulx (leaf following p. 176); and a customs form signed by Peter Muhlenberg on 11 September 1804 (leaf following p. 222). The letter by Jean-Baptiste-Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, is incomplete (last leaf only). The volume has indices of names (p. 353-356) and places (p. 357-360). The upper cover and front free endpaper are detached.

Stuart, Edwin Sydney, 1853-1920. Papers, 1886-1905.
Title:
Papers, 1886-1905.
The bulk of the collection is correspondence, 1886-1905. Some of this material is concerned with Stuart's business, Leary's Bookstore; the majority, however, covers his political activities as a member of Republican organizations, as a Select Councilman, and as Mayor of Philadelphia. Some of the issues are: Stalwart Republicanism, powers of favorable press, city improvements--especially concerning street pavements, and political loyalty over business qualifications. John Wanamaker, Matthew Quay, and Simon Cameron are among Stuart's influential constituents. Business and political papers make up a small part of the collection. Invoices, receipts, and insurance information of Leary, Stuart and Co. may be found among the business papers. More significant are the political papers which include endorsements for the Mayoralty in support of Stuart. One endorsement comes from " a group of colored voters from West Philadelphia calling themselves the Edwin S. Stuart Club." Invitations and announcements for various social functions complete the collection.

Carson, Hampton L. (Hampton Lawrence), 1852-1929. Hampton L. Carson papers, 1715-1941; bulk 1870-1930.
Title:
Hampton L. Carson papers, 1715-1941; bulk 1870-1930.
A diverse amount of materials related to the legal profession and to Carson's many personal interests are contained in this collection. Legal practice correspondence and dockets extend from 1871 until 1941; beginning around 1920, however, the materials in this series increasingly pertain to the legal work of his son, Joseph Carson. Documents exist from Hampton Carson's tenures as attorney general of Pennsylvania, as president of the American Bar Association, and as president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. His work with the 1887 Constitutional Centennial Commission and with the Pennsylvania Commission on Constitutional Amendment and Revision are also represented, as are his affiliations with many law and historical organizations. The nearly one thousand political cartoons in this collection, which were clipped from newspapers and span the years 1863-1904, primarily depict Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker, Senator Matthew S. Quay, and Senator Boies Penrose. Carson's portrait collection of lawyers, judges, and statesmen contains images of well over one hundred notable men, and his letters and ephemera collection contains handwriting samples, newspaper clippings, and other materials related to many of the same men.
