Letters from booksellers and collectors to Swann concerning his activities in the New York book trade. Also holograph appraisal of the library of J.P. Morgan made in 1915-1916 with the assistance of Joseph Martini (Guiseppe Martini). Collection includes testimonials gathered by Swann in England in 1900 as to his character and ability and two typescripts by him on important sales. Correspondents include Cortlandt Field Bishop, P.J. Foley, and Byrne Hackett of the Brick Row Book Shop. Collection includes undated typescript by Ernest Dawson, "What's wrong with the book trade?" Also three photographs and some clippings relating to Swann's departure from the American Art Association in 1927 and other related topics.

Both original catalog records and photocopy in catalog form of collection formed by Marjorie Wiggin Prescott between ca. 1929 and 1965. The collection was particularly strong in books and manuscripts by Oscar Wilde and Rudyard Kipling, but also contained first editions and manuscripts by many 19th and 20th century English and American authors. Also correspondence from book dealers James F. Drake, A.S.W. Rosenbach, and Arthur Swann, as well as from the poet Joseph Auslander. Also black and white photographs of the Prescotts.

Letters signed and unsigned from Benjamin Braman, Appleton Morgan, E. H. Dowden, Althorp, Frank Marcham, Lucy Drucker, Oliver R. Barrett, Arthur Swann, Roger Barrett and others. The copy of Ioannis Michaelis Bruti Fiorentinae Historiae, 1562, belonged to the earl of Sunderland, M.H.T. Luscombe, C.F. Gunther, Oliver Barrett and Roger Barrett. Also includes the American Antiquarian, June 1885, several newspaper clippings and photographs.

The collection contains a letter, 1852, from Alfred Lord Tennyson to Elizabeth Browning, expressing gratitude for her note and Robert Browning's Epilogue; and a letter, 1862, from Alfred Lord Tennyson to "My dear Duchess," saying he has been ill and is planning to arrange a meeting with Queen Victoria now that he is well. There is also a letter, 1934, from Thomas J. Wise to Mr. [Arthur?] Swann, stating that the manuscript of "Crossing the bar" is likely in Emily Tennyson's hand and her writing is very similar to her husband's, and adds news of friends and business matters.

Twenty-one bound and 35 unbound book auction catalogs. Most of the auctions were conducted for the Anderson Auction Company or the American Art Association and (from 1929) by the merged American Art Association, Anderson Galleries. Also: miscellaneous catalogs for sales held between 1898and 1933 at: Charles F. Libbie, Charles F. Heartman, Ritter-Hopson Galleries (Newark, N.J.) and the National Art Galleries (New York City). Most of the catalogs contain Swann's holograph annotations relating to bids, prices and buyers. A number of them contain newspaper and magazine articles relating to the sales and a few have letters from consignors or others involved in the sale.
