The Lord Byron manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings, correspondence, and various documents. The writings include: a holograph fair copy of Marino Faliero ; a draft of Don Juan, Canto XVI ; and a holograph manuscript of "Fare Thee Well," his poem to Lady Byron upon their separation. The bulk of the correspondence is dated between 1818 and 1823 and discusses publishing matters, family arrangements, and his involvement in the Greek war for independence. Correspondents include: Teresa Guiccioli, his mistress ; Leigh Hunt, poet, journalist, and literary critic ; Thomas Moore, Irish poet and songwriter ; Percy Bysshe Shelley, poet ; and over seventy-five others. The documents include checks, a letter of credit, and a codicil to his last will and testament.

Holland, Henry Edward Vassall Fox, 4th baron, 1802-1859. Anecdotes, 1833.

Title: Anecdotes, 1833.

This memoir (267 pp. in French), including copies of letters and documents, concerns the 1730 abdication and subsequent imprisonment of King Victor Amedeus I of Sardinia. The French ambassador at Turin was apparently the author, but he states that he did not write it for publication. The title is "Anecdotes." A note on the inside front cover includes Henry Edward Fox's name and the statement that the manuscript was copied in the chancellery of the French amabassador at Turin, July 21, 1833. The handwriting of the note appears the same as that in our letters by Fox. The coat of arms on the inside front cover indicates that someone in the family of Lord Ilchester (Fox-Strangways) once owned this volume.

Letter copy book kept by the British Envoy, an Italian, concerning a projected marriage between the Duke of York and the Archduchess Claudia Felicitas, addressed principally to Lord Arlington, the Duke of York, the Earl of Sunderland, Sir William Godolphin, the King, Sir Joseph Williamson, the Duke of Richmond, Sir William Swan, Lord Clifford, Sir Jonathan Trelawny and various ambassadors. A leaf pasted inside the cover, giving styles of address, includes the abbot of Lambspring; in 1672 the abbot was John Placid Gascoigne. One letter is from the emperor Leopold to Claudia's mother and another from the Earl of Peterborough to the King. At the end is a summary of the times of various postal services in Europe and a list of letters written, March 14 to December 29. Thought to be written by Bernard Gascoigne, the English resident at Vienna.

Title: Sterling and Francine Clark Papers: Reading Library, 1707-1961.

The Robert Sterling Clark reading library is comprised of ca. 800 titles that document a broad range of interests. Fiction and history predominate, though there is significant subject development in cookery and horses. The collection includes multiple volumes by a number of authors, including substantive first edition holdings of Pearl S. Buck, John Galsworthy, Sinclair Lewis, and P.G. Wodehouse. Many of the volumes include minor penciled annotations by RSC which record reading dates and brief thoughts on the volume in hand.

Craig, Ann, b. 1782. Travel diary describing a tour through Europe, 1834-1835.

Title: Travel diary describing a tour through Europe, 1834-1835.

Holograph diary by Ann Craig of a 6 month tour (October 4th 1834-March 26th 1835) through Europe in the company of her husband John Craig and their two children Graham and Sarah. Their itinerary took them from Antwerp through Belgium into Germany, visiting the cathedral at Aix, along the Rhine to Cologne and Frankfurt, where 13 year old Graham was consigned to Dr. Becker's academy, much to his mother's distress. They then crossed into Switzerland, where they visited Edward Gibbon's old house at Lausanne and Voltaire's house at Ferney. After crossing into Italy by the Simplon Pass, they visited Milan, where they saw the cathedral, the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Pinacoteca ambrosiana as well as Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper (described as "very much destroyed"), and also saw Parmesan cheese being made near Pavia. At Carrara work was in progress on a statue of Christ from the great series commissioned from the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen for the Freuenkirche in Copenhagen. The party then travelled to Pisa and Florence, where they visited the galleries and the Boboli Gardens, before travelling through Tuscany to Rome. They then returned to Genoa, where they visited Mr. Fox (the future Lord Holland) and were shown "the best collection of pencil drawings by his wife Lady Augusta" and followed the coast to Nice (cordoned off due to a cholera outbreak), Aix en Provence and St. Remy before returning to Calais and London by way of Paris. In general, the diarist takes a greater interest in the social fabric of the countries visited than in their monuments and landscape.
