This collection includes a diary of Edward D. Bangs, 1823-1838; many documents and letters addressed to various family members; and a diary probably kept by Mary Grosvenor Bangs, 1840-1842. Edward D. Bangs' diary records daily activities, such as visits, political meetings, and his editorial work with the Worcester National Aegis; memoranda of European political events; his work as an attorney and as Secretary of the Commonwealth; and references to the deaths of notable Americans as well as to various changes which occurred in the appearance of Boston during that period. Mary's diary contains descriptions of visits to Boston, the city's active social life, and descriptions of the inside of its Insane Asylum and House of Representatives. There is also a volume of notes for a will made by Mary Bangs, c. 1850. The folders of documents and letters include as principal correspondents, cousin Alice Bangs ( - ) of Watertown, Mass., Rev. John Healy Heywood (1818- ) of Louisville, Ky., Austin Denny (1795-1830), who served as Bangs' attorney, and Stephen Salisbury II (1798-1884). There are wills, land deeds, commissions, warrants, and receipts, as well as business letters detailing the legal and political activities of the elder and younger Bangs. Two folders of letters written to Mary Bangs from various cousins and friends, 1839-1864, contain primarily information about family members and acquaintances, including letters written by Helen James ( - ), the wife of the Rev. Horace James (1818-1875). Rev. Heywood frequently wrote of his ministry in Louisville and surrounding towns, while Salisbury courted Mary through his letters in 1856. There are also letters of Edward D. Bangs to his friend Nathaniel Howe (1776-1829), who had studied law in Worcester with Levi Lincoln and set up practice as an attorney in Paris, Maine, until 1811, when he moved to Bridgton, Maine. Howe also was a member of the state senate. The letters span the period 1807 to 1820 and provide much information about the sharp conflict which developed between the Federalist and Republican parties before the War of 1812. Bangs and Howe were ardent Republicans and wrote editorials for local anti-Federalist newspapers. (Bangs' column titled "Aequalitas," appeared in the Worcester National Aegis.) His letters are replete with his strong political feelings against the Federalists, political party dealings in Massachusetts, his analysis of election results in his own and Howe's counties, and the reporting of incidents indicating the degree of antipathy which existed in both political camps. Almost every letter also contains Bangs' response to Howe's "law queries," i.e., legal cases, with which Howe required assistance. As the outbreak of war approached, Bangs discussed at greater length Republican campaign strategies, the political stands of specific members of the U.S. Congress, and the need to confront the English ("the European Algerines"). Later, there are references to the "conspiracy" of the "wicked" Northern governors, to U.S. Naval successes, and to the 1817 visit of President James Monroe to New England and the new wave of political unity. Bangs' letters are also rich in family and local news and provide much information about the personal lives of eminent Worcester citizens, including Enoch Lincoln (1788-1829), and Daniel Waldo Lincoln (1784-1815). Several letters detail the extra-marital philanderings of Bangs' one-time law partner William Elijah Green (1777-1865).

The papers of Levi Lincoln, Sr., for the period 1776 to 1821, consist of miscellaneous documents, mostly agreements, powers of attorney, acknowledgments of debt, receipts, and deeds; miscellaneous correspondence, mostly with Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826); law notebooks containing mostly case briefs; a miscellaneous and political notebook; addresses, mostly political; record books relating to farms and the estate of Thomas Legate (1735-1807); a docket for the Worcester County Court of Common Pleas; books concerning legal services and a farm in Oakham, Mass.; a miscellaneous account book; daybooks concerning a saw mill; a farm diary; farm inventories concerning Levi Lincoln's estate; and a letterbook, for the period 1798 to 1809, concerning Massachusetts and national politics and government. There are also farm account books, for the period 1802 to 1882, kept by Levi's wife, Martha Waldo Lincoln, as well as a farm account book and a general store daybook kept by both Levi and Martha. The papers of Abraham Lincoln, for the period 1790 to 1825, consist of miscellaneous documents, mostly concerning his public service; acknowledgements of debt; schedules concerning the third U.S. census; accounts and receipts; business ledgers; and account books and daybooks concerning his store and the services which he performed as a justice of the peace. The papers of Levi Lincoln, Jr., for the period 1807 to 1868, consist of miscellaneous correspondence, mostly political; miscellaneous documents; deeds; and addresses, mostly political, and notes on speeches. The papers of John Waldo Lincoln, for the period 1808 to 1853, consist of miscellaneous correspondence, much of which concerns Massachusetts militia affairs; business correspondence, particularly with Francis Lincoln, Henry Bromfield, William and Thomas Cotterill, and Scholefield, Redfern and Company; and ledgers, account books, daybooks, invoice books, a cash book, a transportation book, and a letterbook concerning his mercantile interests. The papers of Enoch Lincoln, for the period 1809 to 1835, consist of miscellaneous correspondence, much of which is political, including correspondence concerning the northeastern boundary of Maine; correspondence concerning Maine real estate; miscellaneous addresses, legal papers, and historical works; receipts; and a daybook concerning a sawmill. The papers of William Lincoln, for the period 1731 to 1843, consist of miscellaneous correspondence, including letters to various family members, Joseph G. The papers of Daniel Waldo Lincoln, for the period 1832 to 1879, consist of miscellaneous correspondence; correspondence concerning a Union regiment to be commanded by him; addresses, mostly relating to the Boston & Albany Railroad Company; deeds; miscellaneous papers; memoranda volumes concerning Worcester municipal government and the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company; a diary with memoranda concerning the Boston & Albany Railroad Company; and a field, garden, and weather notebook. The papers of Waldo Lincoln, for the period 1879 to 1930, consist of miscellaneous correspondence, addresses, and papers; genealogical correspondence, notes, and charts concerning the Lincoln family and related families; notebooks containing a draft of Waldo Lincoln's History of the Lincoln Family with related correspondence and newsclippings; and correspondence of Waldo's wife, Fanny Chandler Lincoln. The collection also includes papers, for the period 1786 to 1843, on the purchase, management and sale of Maine real estate. These papers consist of correspondence of Levi Lincoln, Sr., and William Lincoln (1801-1843), as well as documents, memoranda, land plans, and papers concerning a suit held in the Supreme Judicial Court at Worcester in 1838 between Erasmus Holbrook et al. vs. Simeon Burt et al. over land in Penobscot County, Me. There are also accounts and receipts. There are replies to Edward Winslow Lincoln (1820-1896) to invitations to an inaugural ball. The collection also contains correspondence to Hester Newton Wetherell (1823-1899?), Mrs. John Walcott, relating to a portrait of her grandfather, Levi Lincoln, Sr. The miscellaneous papers and volumes, which cover the period 1667 to 1937, consist of correspondence and documents of various members of the Lincoln family, an index to Worcester views, an index to histories of New England Indians, Lincoln family deeds, mostly belonging to Abraham Lincoln (1740-1823) of Cohasset, Mass.; and a Lincoln & Fearing invoice book concerning general merchandise. The unidentified materials, which cover the period 1814 to 1845, consist of farm account books, law briefs, an oration, addresses, and a newsclipping from the Barre Gazette, 1841, regarding the "Memoirs of Petersham."

Parker, Leonard M. (Leonard Moody), 1789-1854. Papers, 1811-1837.

Title: Papers, 1811-1837.

This collection consists mainly of letters for the period 1811 to 1837. The letters are written by various family members, including Leonard Moody Parker's brothers-in-law, especially Enoch Lincoln (1788-1829), his mother-in-law Martha Waldo Lincoln (1761-1828), his wife and daughters, and several letters and poetry written by Parker to Martha Lincoln before their marriage. The letters from his brothers-in-law contain references to politics in Charlestown, the British invasion of Washington, D.C. in 1814, and the celebrations in Worcester following the Treaty of Ghent in 1815. Other letters refer to family births, weddings, and engagements, especially that of Francis Harrison Kinnicutt (1812-1885) to Elizabeth Waldo Parker, descriptions of Worcester society by Parker's daughters Martha and Elizabeth, including temperance meetings, liquor license uproars, and their first railroad ride. Included also in the collection is a deed of guardianship concerning the sale of land owned by Parker's children, an invitation by the mayor of Boston to meet the President of the United States in 1833, and a personal cash account book kept by an unidentified employee of Parker's in Boston, 1833-1834, containing lists of salary received, rent paid, and other daily expenses.

Webster, John White, 1793-1850. Papers, 1824-1850.

Title: Papers, 1824-1850.

This collection contains letters of John White Webster, for the period 1824 to 1848, and material pertaining to the trial, 1850. The letters were written primarily to fellow mineral-collectors concerning their "finds" and the exchange of various minerals. The recipients include William Lincoln (1801-1843) of Worcester, Mass., and Enoch Lincoln (1788-1829) of Paris, Me. The collection includes a detailed newsclipping account of the trial from the Boston Daily Advertiser as it transpired in the Supreme Judicial Court in March 1850. There is also an indexed booklet containing the depositions of various witnesses for the prosecution, including scientists, physicians, police detectives, the janitor who discovered the corpse, and relatives of Dr. Parkman who identified his remains. Several depositions contain detailed scientific analyses and mearsurements for purposes of identification.

Letters to Neal from Park Benjamin, Sir John Bowring, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Pierpont, Ann S. Stephens, and others concern authors and writing, payment for Neal's work, health concerns, slavery in the south, interpretations of poetry, comments about Portland, Maine, and thank-you letters. In addition, correspondence from the Sun Times in New York, the Boston Literary Gazette, and other publications write to Neal soliciting submissions. Also included in the collection are two dime novels written by Neal: Little Moccasin and the White-Faced Pacer, and several bound scrapbooks containing clippings of his work.
