[original located at the Maryland Historical Society], and of Anne Eliza (Pleasants) Gordon while on her honeymoon in Europe, 1857; correspondence between John Hampden Pleasants and Caroline Matilda (Garland) Garland, 1844-1846, and correspondence concerning the duel between Pleasants and Thomas Ritchie; and correspondence and accounts, 1913-1918, of Douglas Huntly Gordon, Sr. (1866-1918), and correspondence, check registers and accounts, 1897-1923, of Elizabeth Iris Southall (Clarke) Gordon Biddle Gordon. Also include scattered correspondence, 1917-1921, of Douglas Huntly Gordon, Jr., including letters from J. Gordon Dorrance while serving with the American Expeditionary Forces in France and Germany during and after World War I; and miscellany.

The collection consists primarily of letters, 1885-1900, from Douglas Huntly Gordon to his widowed mother, Anne Elizabeth (Pleasants) Gordon. Although both resided in Baltimore, the family owned property in Virginia and family members travelled extensively along the East Coast. Douglas's letters to his mother generally concern family members and friends, the maintenance of family residences, and especially the health of Douglas's older brother, Basil Brown Gordon. There is some information on sources of income for family members.

Collection consists primarily of the personal correspondence of Douglas Huntly Gordon and of his wife, Elizabeth Iris Southall (Clarke) Gordon Biddle Gordon, both of Baltimore, Md. Correspondents include relatives and friends, as well as their children. Douglas's correspondence includes the exchange of letters, 1893-1918, that began with courtship and extended throughout the couple's marriage. Elizabeth's correspondence includes courtship letters from rejected suitors and a few letters concerning her second marriage to J. Wilmer Biddle of Philadelphia. A few household accounts survive for both Douglas and Elizabeth, as well as a small number of papers pertaining to the education of their children. Invitations, visiting cards, and brochures for schools and summer camps offer insights into the lives of a well-to-do family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection also contains a small amount of correspondence of Douglas's mother, Anne Eliza (Pleasants) Gordon, and of other family members.

The collection contains letters, 1887-1901, from Anne Eliza (Pleasants) Gordon, an aging, well-to-do widow, to her sons, Douglas Huntly Gordon and Basil Brown Gordon. Although they all resided in Baltimore, Md., the family also owned property in Rappahannock County, Va. Anne Eliza travelled extensively in the mid-Atlantic region, but her letters focus on the daily activities of a small circle of family and friends and her emotional responses to them, not on describing her surroundings. Most individual letters are not dated.
