Papers consist of correspondence and other items. Included is the family correspondence (1772-1795) of Penuel Bowen. Family correspondence (1795-1833) of Nathaniel Bowen includes many letters from him in Charleston (S.C.), Providence (R.I.), and elsewhere to his sister Susannah Bowen (later Cooke) in Boston (Mass.) concerning her education, family matters, his visit (1801) to the Capers family plantation (St. Helena Island, S.C.), and other matters, as well as letters from Margaret W. Bowen (Mrs. Nathaniel Bowen) to Susannah Bowen Cooke which discuss, among other things, Charleston social life and family matters. Cooke family correspondence (1811-1839) chiefly consists of the letters of Susan Bowen Cooke and John Cooke and their children Nathaniel Bowen Cooke, John H. Cooke, and Frances Cooke Town. Letters from Boston (Mass.), Brooklyn (N.Y.) and elsewhere concern family matters, Christian faith and living, education, travel, and other matters. Included are letters (1827-1830) of John H. Cooke regarding his travels throughout Europe in the merchant marine. Other Cooke family correspondence (1837-1857) includes letters of Frances Cooke Town (Syracuse, N.Y.), Anna H. Bowen Stock (a cousin), Lucy Barrett (Montreal, Canada), S. Elizabeth Hovey, Susan Bowen Cooke, and others. Included are many letters to Nathaniel Bowen Cooke while at Brown University, in Providence (R.I.), Bristol (R.I.), Clappville (Mass.), Webster (Mass.), and elsewhere. Correspondence mainly concerns family matters and includes letters of John H. Cooke, Frederick W. Cooke, and George B. Cooke describing their lives and travels as seamen. A small bound volume (1731-1737) contains receipts and accounts for the sales of groceries and other items to Samuel Oxx, Nathaniel Pearse (an ancestor of the Cooke family) and others, probably in Bristol (R.I.). Other items include a printed folder about the Female Humane Society of Cambridge (Mass.); copies of poems; and writings (1836-1850) of Nathaniel Bowen Cooke including essays and speeches about philosophy, literature, and other subjects.

Correspondence (1772-1788) of Penuel Bowen includes a letterbook fragment (1786-1788) containing drafts of his letters from Charleston (S.C.), Johns Island (S.C.), and Savannah (Ga.) to family members and clergymen. Correspondence concerns his attempts to obtain a parish post, the education of his children, his philosophy of education, the difficulties of raising his children while separated from his family, comparisons between the North and South, and other matters. Correspondence (1788-1795) of Susannah Barrett Bowen, widow of Penuel Bowen, concerns her husband's death, plans to return to Boston (Mass.), religious matters, her assistance from the Society for the Relief of Widows and Orphans of the Protestant Episcopal Clergy, and other matters. Included is a letter (1795) to her from Bishop Robert Smith concerning her son Nathaniel Bowen. Other correspondents include her brother Samuel Barrett and sister Anna Hill (both in Boston), and Nathaniel Russell of Charleston (S.C.).

Chiefly legal documents re cases heard by Waties, and family papers related to Waties' business affairs, and plantation management; including Aug. 1826, from [Thomas Bee], Charleston, re Mary Harrison's case and the need to codify laws against inter-racial unions. Plantation records include receipt for payment, 15 May 1796, to Hannah Bonhoste for instruction of "two Black girls"; bound volume, 1804- 1814, re accounts with overseers and gardener; accounts, 1817-1827, kept with April [later William] Ellison, a free person of color who rebuilt and improved Waties' cotton gin and other farm implements. Also including letter, 14 Oct. 1812, from Tho[ma]s Bee, Charleston, S.C., commenting on elections and lamenting impact of the War of 1812; correspondence, 1813-1828, from Charleston cotton factors, Osborn & Waring and its successor firm, North, Webb & Osborn; and list of fees for boarding, transportation, and servants in Columbia, S.C. Letter, 29 [Apr. 1825], Francis Kinloch, to Wilson Waties, attibuting rise in prices for field hands to increased cotton sales, and commenting on fears of insurrection after the Denmark Vesey affair in Charleston; and valuations of slaves and receipts for slave sales. Receipts re cotton gin, tuition, medical bills, purchase of encyclopedia volumes, construction of house at Stateburg, and expenditure for a child's funeral; and accounts kept with various persons, including Thomas Sumter, and workers, including a boatbuilder and a Philadelphia mechanic for painting and repair of carriage. Materials pertaining to Claremont Episcopal Church, Sumter County, S.C., include letter, 19 Apr. 1813, [Nathaniel] Bowen, N.Y., explaining his interest in the parish; letters, 1823-1825, Francis Kinloch, Wilson Waties, and Thomas Waties, re disagreement over valuation of slaves sold by Kinloch to the vestry for use by the rector; and letter, 22 July 1824, Marden, to the Rev. John J. Tschudy, Rector, St. John's Berkeley, re collection of glebe rents, and a dispute between the upper and lower divisions of the parish. Other correspondents include Benjamin Elliott, Cleland Kinloch, and James Louis Petigru. Six oversize items (filed in Pob) date to Oct. 1810, 14 Dec. 1827, and two undated items.
