A bound volume of letters, written in the form of a journal, from Martha Babcock Amory to her mother, Mrs. Gardiner Greene, on her wedding trip to Europe with her husband Charles Amory. The Amorys visited France, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, and Germany. Also included is a short typescript memoir of Susan Greene Dexter, wife of Franklin Gordon Dexter, written by publisher Daniel Berkeley Updike in 1934.

Papers of Charles Amory and other members of his family. Includes Civil War papers (1861-63) of his son Lieut. Copley Amory, 4th U.S. Cavalry, with a few other items to his death in 1880; two letters to Charles from John A. Andrew (1861); reminiscences (1869) of Charles's wife Martha B. (Greene) of her childhood home in Boston; letters (1890-91) of Charles to his grandchildren; correspondence of his grandson Copley (1866-1960) with Susan C. Amory concerning family matters; and with Elizabeth A. Ernst, among others, concerning the disposition of Amory family papers. (Cont) Also, typescript and ms. drafts (1942?) of a Franklen family history, apparently never published, by Copley Amory (b. 1890); estate papers (1920-21) of Helen F. Chace, including an inventory of her personal property; and some transcripts of correspondence (1716-25) of Thomas Amory.

Title: Humane Society of Massachusetts records, 1791-1909.

Records of the Humane Society of Massachusetts, established in 1786 to assist individuals and ships in need of rescue. The Society later expanded its efforts, supporting the Asylum for the Insane and the Boston Lying-In Hospital, and rewarding individuals for heroic rescue attempts. It maintained life-boats and rescue stations along the Massachusetts seashore and provided instruction in lifesaving. The bulk of the collection consists of case reports of rescues (1899-1909); also, a list of annual subscribers, 1791-1913; accounts with Charles Amory, 1849-55; and some miscellaneous items. Includes printed discourses and engravings.
