Bulk of the collection consists of both official and personal correspondence documenting his naval career and includes navy requests, assignments, claims, and instructions, complete correspondence files for his years, 1937-1939, as president of the naval War College, with information on the Munich Crisis, 1938, the American Naval Mission in Brazil, with civic organizations, with Heads of Bureau of Navigation, and with prominent naval officers, including Jonas Ingram, William Moffet, Edward C. Kalbfus, Chester W. Nimitz, and David F. Sellers, and letters of condolence upon the death of his wife, Cornelia, in 1944. Speeches of Snyder as well as Ernest J. King, Chester W. Nimitz, and James Forrestal are included. Miscellany includes programs, invitations, maps, newspaper clippings of the Spanish American War and Dewey's victory at Manila Bay, 1898, scrapbooks of Great White Fleet visits to foreign ports, 1907-1908, and the return of remains of John Paul Jones to USA, 1908, and diplomas and certificates. Photographs include family pictures as well as ships, naval officers, naval visits, and navy ceremonies.

James M. McHugh papers, 1930-1965.
Included are military correspondence and intelligence reports, family and other personal correspondence, diaries, among them a journal that McHugh kept on his motor trip over the Burma Road (December 1938-January 1939), photographs (ca. 1300 items, many not precisely identified, of wartime figures, and colleagues and friends), manuscripts of articles and books, and printed items. Subjects of the correspondence and reports to 1946 include China in general, the Sino-Japanese War, McHugh's association with or impressions of the Chiangs, T.V. Soong, Ai-Ling Soong (Madame H.H. Kung), and other Chinese public figures, the management of the Bank of China, disputes and rivalries among American interests with contracts for supplying the Chinese Air Force. Other subjects include the bribery of Chinese officials, the administration of Lend-Lease in China, the construction and use of the Burma Road, the bombing of the British gunboat H.M.S. "Sandpiper," the work of the American Volunteer Group (AVG), Japan and the Japanese people, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the activities of William Henry Donald, advisor to the Chiangs, Ambassador Nelson Trusler Johnson, and Clarence Gauss, Vice-President Hyman G. Rickover, General Evans F. Carlson, and General Claire Lee Chennault. After 1946, the letters are primarily analyses of events of national and international importance, such as the civil war in Indo-China and tVietnamese conflict, Soviet-American relations, Sino-Soviet relations, Amcan presidential elections, and the foreign policies of the Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson administrations, written to and from various representatives of Jardine, Matheson & Co. and Balfour, Guthrie & Co., including Hugh David MacEwen Barton, David Bosanquet, Michael Alexander Robert Young-Herries, John Henry Keswick, William Johnson Keswick, and Erik Watts; also correspondence with Richard R. Smith, formerly with the British-American Tobacco Company (BAT) in Shanghai, on world affairs and on Smith's life in California. Also, manuscripts and correspondence relating to an article by K.C. Wu (Kuo-chen Wu), former governor of Formosa; and correspondence and articles of McHugh's wife, Maxine Davis, the writer. Other correspondents include Major Ronald Aubry Boone, John H. This series consists of photograph files maintained in the photography laboratory at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Moffett Field in California. The photographs, taken by members of the Fleet Imaging Command, Pacific and its predecessors, provide a pictorial history of Moffett Field. Included are aerial views of Moffett Field; photographs documenting construction projects at the facility; and a panoramic photograph showing the first landing of the Navy airship USS Macon at Moffett Field in 1933 (428-MP-578). There are additional pictures of the USS Macon and the USS Akron, including photographs showing interior fitments and the airships in-flight; balloon training and non-rigid airship operations during World War II; various Navy aircraft; and Navy photo reconnaissance activities at Guadalcanal during World War II. Personalities pictured in the series include Admiral William Moffett, for whom the facility was named (428-MP-263); Rear Admirals Harry E. Yarnell, Joseph M. Reeves, and Captain John H. Towers aboard the USS Saratoga in 1928 (428-MP-822); and President Gerald Ford visiting Moffett Field in 1975 (428-MP-613). In addition, the series includes views of Half Dome, Lower Yosemite Falls, and El Capitan at Yosemite National Park, California (428-MP-692 , 693, and 694); the construction of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge; typhoon damage to photo reconnaissance squadron VP-3's facilities at Yonabaru, Okinawa in 1945 (428-MP-834 to 845, with gaps); U.S. destroyers run aground at Point Honda, California in 1923 (428-MP-873 to 878); and a visit of U.S. Navy ships to New Zealand and Australia in 1925 (428-MP-829 to 860, with gaps). All of the photographs are captioned.
